Coffenbury Lake: ‘Children and

pets are at increased risk for exposure’ Continued from Page 1A

The
Oregon
Health
Authority stressed that drink-
ing water from the lake is
especially dangerous, and also
discouraged swimming. Peo-
ple can use the lake near War-
renton for boating and other
recreation, the state said, but
should avoid excessive water
spray. Fish caught at the
lake should be cleaned of all
fat, skin and organs before
cooking.
“Exposure to toxins can
produce a variety of symp-
toms including numbness, tin-
gling and dizziness that can
lead to difficulty breathing or
heart problems, and require
immediate medical attention,”
the health authority said in a
statement. “Symptoms of skin
irritation, weakness, diarrhea,
nausea, cramps and faint-
ing should also receive med-
ical attention if they persist or
worsen. Children and pets are
at increased risk for exposure
because of their size and level
of activity.”
People should always
avoid areas with visible scum
that looks foamy, scummy,
thick like paint, pea-green,
blue-green or brownish-red.
Extra nutrients
Similar warnings have
been posted at other nearby
lakes. Most recently, the state
issued an advisory at Cullaby
Lake in 2014.
The bacteria occurs natu-
rally in bodies of water, but
Colin Murphey/The Daily Astorian
Warnings were recently posted around Coffenbury Lake
at Fort Stevens State Park because of blue-green algae
that can produce toxins. The warnings advise people to
avoid water where thick, foamy substances that can be
pea-green, blue-green or brownish-red are present.
requires an extra dump of
nutrients to bloom like this.
“They’re always in the
water with us,” Hillwig said.
But it’s when they get these
extra nutrients that they can
begin to rapidly multiply
and form dense colonies that
become visible in the water.
Human activities upland
of the body of water where
the bloom occurs are usually
a contributing factor; the extra
nutrients present in the water
are often traced back to the
use of fertilizers, a leaky sep-
tic system, or human or ani-
mal feces.
A long, rainy winter and
spring can delay or even
decrease the number of blooms
the state sees in streams, rivers
and lakes. In some cases this
year, blooms did not occur as
early as they have in the past.
But the sudden appearance of
dry, hot weather, meant water
levels quickly dropped despite
the boost from winter and
spring rains this year. Shallow
lakes like Coffenbury quickly
became even more shallow,
the water warming even more,
making them more suscepti-
ble to this type of bloom, Hill-
wig said.
“The only way to not have
these blooms form is to really
look at what’s happening in
your watershed,” Hillwig
said. Once they do occur, she
says, there’s no silver bullet to
get rid of a bloom without the
risk of damaging the rest of
the ecosystem. Park manag-
ers will just need to wait it out.
Closing: Building’s future up in the air
Continued from Page 1A
Moving around
A Dec. 9, 1922, story
in the Morning Astorian
said J.C. Penney was destroyed
in the major fire that gutted
much of downtown. Penney’s
moved to Ninth and Astor
streets temporarily, before
relocating in 1923 to the lower
floor of the Osburn-O’Brien
Building at 14th and Com-
mercial streets. About five
years later, it would move one
storefront west to its current
location.
“The J.C. Penney company
store will open for business
this morning in its new home
in the Morton Nelson Build-
ing on Commercial Street near
Fourteenth and just west of the
former location of the estab-
lishment,” said an article in
the Oct. 26, 1928, Morning
Astorian.
After Penney’s?
Representatives from J.C.
Penney, which owns the Mor-
ton Nelson Building, declined
to comment on the future of the
building after the store closes.
The store, between Paramount
Drug Co. and Allstate Insur-
ance, was one of 13 locations
made to look alike, according
to Operations Supervisor Chris
Hoffman, and includes a tiled
entrance inscribed with the
store’s name.
City Planner Nancy Fer-
ber said there are no develop-
ment restrictions on the build-
ing, but that a major change
of use, say, from mercantile to
manufacturing, could require a
change of occupancy. Exterior
alterations could come under
historic review, she said, if the
new tenants or owners want
to change the character of the
building.
Dailey: ‘I love living in a small town’
Continued from Page 1A
She joined the Seaside
Downtown
Development
Association as an adminis-
trative assistant and, not long
after, became executive direc-
tor. The association enhances
the community with beautifi-
cation projects and organizes
events.
“I love living in a small
town. I get to work with won-
derful people in the commu-
nity,” she said.
One of her goals is to share
her passion for belly dancing
with others.
“I love showing people
the art of it and giving people
exposure to it,” she said.
Dailey uses some cho-
reography from her instruc-
tor, Susan Embum, who has a
home studio in Randle, Wash-
ington, but she creates most of
her routines.
Some of her performances
are improvised. “I sync into
the music, and I basically
let the music take me,” she
said.
Dailey is also a runner,
but describes belly dancing
as a “great alternative form of
exercise.”
it the other way around” —
cool air blows from the ocean
inland. But shifts do happen
several times a year, Macke
said, causing a spike in tem-
perature for a few days.
Astoria’s hottest day on
record occurred on July 1,
1942 with a high of 101
degrees.
In the greater Portland
metro and Willamette Val-
ley areas, temperatures are
expected to spike up to 104
to 107 degrees Wednesday
and Thursday, with the hot
weather likely to continue
on Friday at a slightly lower,
but still warm, 100 degrees.
