Elmes, Jacobs seeking tournament repeats
Locals still in contention
The Daily Astorian
WARRENTON — Familiar names, tradi-
tional matchups, locals advancing … and a
few fantastic finishes Thursday at the Astoria
Golf & Country Club, where golfers battled a
stiff wind on the fourth day of match play in
the Oregon Coast Invitational.
With two days to go, they’re down to the
semifinals in all divisions in the 107th annual
tournament, which concludes Saturday.
Golfers were talking about the strong winds
in the afternoon, but that didn’t stop several
from playing strong rounds to advance.
There’s still a few defending champions
in contention — namely Grand Champion
champ Riley Elmes and Women’s title holder
Amanda Jacobs.
Elmes scored a victory over Daniel Ter-
rell in a championship flight quarterfinal,
along with Rex Puterbaugh, who defeated
Jeff Canessa to advance to the Final Four.
Anthony Arvidson will face Randy Tucker in
Friday’s other semifinal.
It was Throwback Thursday in the
Women’s championship flight bracket, where
Lara Tennant and Charisse Spada squared off
in a quarterfinal, with Tennant surviving the
round in the battle of the longtime friendly
foes.
It’s the 30th anniversary of Spada’s first
championship in the invitational (1987),
while the nine-time champion Tennant is
back in the semifinals again, along with sis-
ter Cappy Mack.
Tennant will face defending champion
Amanda Jacobs, who finished her Thursday
quarterfinal match after the 11th hole; while
Mack has the tough task of facing a golfer on
a roll, medalist qualifier Gretchen Johnson
from the Portland Golf Club.
Johnson is coming off a 3 & 2 loss to
Christina Proteau in the title match of the
Pacific Northwest Women’s Mid-Amateur
last weekend at Fairwood Golf & Country
Club in Renton, Washington.
Johnson has rebounded well, as she shot
a one-over par in qualifying, and built a 4-up
lead on Katie Sturgell after nine holes in
Thursday’s round.
Her best friend on the summer tour, Jacobs,
is gunning for her fourth invitational champi-
onship in the last five years.

nament regulars Bret Stevens and Mike Malt-
man scored wins to advance in the champi-
onship flight of the Seniors Division. Stevens
was even with Michael Healy through 15
holes, then went 1-up on the 16th.
Elsewhere, Gaylord Davis defeated Mike
Graham to secure a spot in the Final Four of
the Super Seniors’ championship flight, along
with Peter Roscoe, Jeff Leinassar and Larry
Wobbrock.
Dismissed Oregon receiver Carrington signs with Utah
DUII arrest cost
him with Ducks
By KAREEM COPELAND
Associated Press
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah
may have a new No. 1 receiver
after former Oregon wideout Dar-
ren Carrington signed with the
Utes.
The university confirmed
Thursday that the senior is in
Salt Lake City and will join
the team but is not immediately
able to be with the Utes on the
field. Utah would not elaborate on
the remaining hurdles to get him
fully cleared as fall practices begin
today.
Carrington was dismissed from
the Ducks two weeks ago, soon
after he was arrested on a misde-
meanor charge of driving under
the influence.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound San
Diego native steps onto the Utah
team as the most experienced and
successful receiver on the roster.
Last season as a junior, Carrington
had 43 catches for 606 yards and
five touchdowns. He has 112
career receptions for 1,919 yards
and 15 touchdowns.
The Utes are plenty familiar
with Carrington after he caught
a game-winning, 17-yard touch-
down pass with two seconds left
last season for a 30-28 Oregon
victory.
Eugene Police have said Car-
rington was arrested after hitting
a pole at a McDonald’s restaurant
at 3:15 a.m. on July 1. In addition
to DUI, Carrington was cited for
careless driving and making an
improper turn.
“It’s a case-by-case basis,
you can’t treat every case the
same because there’s differ-
ent dynamics, different circum-
stances,” Utah coach Kyle Whit-
tingham said on the Pac-12
Network. “First thing you do is
do your homework, talk to all the
peripheral people in his life and
people that have been close to
him. … Is it a good kid that’s made
some bad decisions? Or is it just a
bad kid?
“As a coach, you have to make
that judgment. You’re not right
100 percent of the time. But you
just (have) your gut feel and go
with it.”
Seahawks tickets
go on sale Monday

mates Kani Benoit (29) Darrian

NCAA college football game at Au-
tzen Stadium in Eugene in April.
SEATTLE — Seattle Seahawks tick-
ets go on sale Monday — but the sale plan
will be a little different than in the past.
KOMO-TV reported that the team had
big problems with the camping and wrist-
band process last year — so that’s not
allowed any more.
This year, the line will start at 7 a.m. at
the northwest box office, which will then
open at 9 a.m. You can only buy four tick-
ets at a time.
More than 3,400 single-game tick-
ets will be available per game. The Sea-
hawks will sell half of those tickets, and
the remaining tickets will be made avail-
able online to members of the Blue Pride
wait list.
Seahawks training camp kicks off
Sunday.
