Providence Seaside Hospital
Caring for North Coast Communities
On Dec. 6, 1856, five Sisters of Providence crossed the stormy Columbia River into the Pacific Northwest
to answer a call for help from a new pioneering community. What the Sisters found were many
communities in need of service. Through collaboration with like-minded partners, their vision grew
to a five-state health system with ministries in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Montana and California.
160
years
Since then, two remarkable organizations with rich heritages have formed a partnership in order
to serve more communities. On July 6, 2016, Providence Health & Services merged with St. Joseph
Health, founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange more than a century ago. With support from
111,000 employees, known as caregivers, Providence St. Joseph Health reaches more people through
health and social services offered at 50 hospitals and 829 clinics across seven states, including Texas
and New Mexico.
As part of this network, Providence Seaside Hospital and clinics, established 36 years ago, continue
the tradition of caring that the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sisters of Providence began. The
cornerstone of our Mission is to provide compassionate care that is accessible for all, especially
the poor and vulnerable.
