Seventh-day Adventist
Humanitarian aid worker Carl Wilkens is
speaking about his experiences in Rwanda at
6:30 p.m. tonight at the Long Beach, Wash-
ington, Seventh-day Adventist Church, 2707
Pacific Ave. At the same time, a movie about
his experiences is being shown at the Astoria
Seventh-day Adventist Church, 300 Nehalem
Ave. On Saturday, Wilkens speaks at the Astoria
church at 11 a.m.
Wilkens moved his young family to Rwanda
in spring 1990. When the genocide was launched
in April 1994, he was one of the only Americans
to remain in the country, bringing food, water
and medicine to groups of orphans trapped
around the city. His actions saved the lives of
hundreds. He returned to the U.S. in 1996.
After being featured in the 2004 PBS Front-
line documentary, “Ghosts of Rwanda,” he
received letters, phone calls and offers from
teachers around the country to come and share
his experiences with students. In January 2008,
he quit his job and dedicated himself full time
to accepting these invitations. Since then, he
and his wife, Teresa, have formed an educa-
tional nonprofit, “World Outside My Shoes.”
