The Harald Haugaard / Helene Blum Band
from Denmark will entertain prior to the
Queen Coronation. Enjoy their folk jazz from
Scandinavia.
BEER GARDEN OPEN

Astoria Brewing Company will present a
selection of award-winning handcrafted
microbrews and a limited menu.

Beef pot roast, baked potato, green beans,
roll, salad, pie, beverage, $13; children under

QUEEN’S CORONATION
7 p.m. – arena
Princesses sponsored by the Danish Society,
Finnish Brotherhood, Sons of Norway and
VASA Swedish Lodge will speak about their
Scandinavian heritage. A panel of judges
will select one to reign as Miss Scandinavia
2017. Soloists from the community will sing
the national songs of Denmark, Finland, Ice-
land, Norway and Sweden. The Nordic Viking
Dancers will perform traditional folk dances.
TORCHLIGHT PARADE TO
BONFIRE AND HEX BURNING
8 p.m. approximately (following the
Queen’s coronation) – parking area
Scandia men with fl aming torches will lead the
newly crowned Miss Scandinavia and audience
members to the bonfi re to throw straw hexes
into the fl ames. This Danish tradition symbol-
izes ridding oneself of bad luck for the year.
QUEEN’S FAMILY BALL
WITH SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRY
8 to 10:30 p.m. – Exhibit Hall
Miss Scandinavia and her father or special
partner will lead the fi rst dance of the 2017
Midsummer Festival. Tonight’s the night if you
like the Chicken Dance and Hokey Pokey, and
the locals’ favorites: the Butterfl y and the Var-
souvienne. Scandinavian Country of Asto-
ria will be providing the tunes. It’s your turn
to participate and dance a waltz, schottische,
polka, snoa, humppa or other favorite Scandi-
navian dance. Join the dancing or watch the
dancers and listen to great music.

The 13th annual Running of the Trolls is a
walk or run in the beautiful Walluski country-
side. Proceeds from the race will benefi t the
Scandinavian Midsummer Festival Associa-
tion Scholarship Fund. Registration is avail-
able online or at the festival. Check-in is from
7 to 8 a.m. Saturday in the Main Entry Hall.

tian Andersen; puppet show at 3 p.m.: “Ivar,
the Short but Brave Viking” by Annie Jacob-
sen and “The Three Billy Goats Gruff ” by Chris-
ten Asbjornsen.

Astoria Brewing Company will present a
selection of award-winning handcrafted
microbrews and a limited menu. The Astor
Street Opry will present its standing-room
only show of olio acts from “Shanghaied in
Astoria” at 1, 3 and 5 p.m. There will be addi-
tional live music with The Squeezer and the
Geezer (Coreen and Ken) in the afternoon.

FLAG RAISING
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – arena
Young festival attendees can participate in
children’s activities in the Barnefest area. This
area is staff ed by volunteers from Tongue
Point Job Corps Center, the Nordic Viking
Dancers, and by parents. Children under 12
11:30 a.m. – festival grounds
Miss Scandinavia and her court, costumed
dancers and entertainers, representatives from
the Scandinavian lodges, and family groups
will assemble in the dining area of the Exhibit
Hall and then parade through the arena and
festival grounds to the outdoor stage for the
Flag Raising and Midsummer Pole ceremony.

There will be live Scandinavian-themed enter-
tainment on two stages throughout most of the
day. Pick up a festival program at the admission
table or view one of the posted schedules to
fi nd your favorite band, singer or dance troupe.
The Harald Haugaard Helene Blum Band from
Denmark will entertain three times in the arena.
The show varies each performance so try to
catch them all. The Astor Street Opry will enter-
tain three times in the beer garden with oleo
acts from Shanghaied in Astoria.
