Rachael McDougall and
her wife traveled from South
Bend, Washington, to take
part in the Astoria Pride
festivities.
“It’s so wonderful to have
a queer community this close,
because on the Washing-
ton side, there’s nothing,”
McDougall said. “I haven’t
felt this relaxed and free to be
me in a long time.”
For fear of losing cus-
tody of her children and other
backlash, McDougall said
she did not come out about
her sexuality until she was
55. With her partner of five
years, she said she loves and
feels love in a way she never
has before.
McDougall enjoys the
opportunity to surround her-
self with people from the
LGBTQ community
“It’s always kind of sweet
and sour because I wish
we lived in a world where
people felt free to be who
they are.”
Nevertheless,
McDou-
gall said she appreciates the
chance to participate in Pride
events. “It’s not like trying
to swim upstream. It’s like
being in a big pond, a big
queer pond.”

to Walla Walla, Washington,

Movie Database, Adam West
was born William “Billy”
West Anderson on Sept. 19,
1928, in Walla Walla, to par-
ents Otto West Anderson, a
farmer, and his wife, Audrey
V. Speer, an opera singer. She
was also known as Adele.
After a divorce Speer
remarried. She took Billy and
his younger brother, John, to
Seattle.
At age 14, Billy attended
Lakeside School, then went
to Whitman College, where
he got a degree in literature
and psychology.
During his last year of
college, he also married
17-year-old Billie Lou Yea-
ger, the first of several mar-
riages, before launching
a career in film and show
business.
In 1959 he moved to Hol-
lywood and took the name
Adam West. He appeared in
the film “The Young Phila-
delphians,” and guest starred
on television Westerns and
crime dramas.
His mother, meanwhile,
remarried once again and
lived in Gearhart’s Ocean
House on Pacific Way. Gear-
hart’s Jim Furnish remem-
bered her as Adele DeSilva.
West was a constant visi-
tor to Gearhart, Jeff Ter Har,
a neighbor at the time, said.
“I was like 10 years old,”
Ter Har said. “I would be
home and he would be at my
parents house for cocktails
and all my friends would
come over and see me. ‘I
have Batman at my house
— Bruce Wayne without the
mask.’ It was pretty cool for
me.”
Ter Har said West’s fam-
ily became really good
friends with his parents and
his family. West’s brother,
John, spent “a lot of time
down here too, also his wife
Carol,” Ter Har said. “A lot
of the kids are still in the
Portland area.”
Scott Bechtolt of Asto-
ria still cherishes memories
of when Batman came to
Gearhart.
“We walked down a few
houses and approached a
house that looked like a light-
house without the tower or a
nautical fort,” Bechtolt said.
“I thought that was cool …
then we knocked … and
… Batman answered the
door! Just like on T.V. …
Ka pow!”

May: ‘It doesn’t matter how long it takes’

Ponce May said she
had some false starts going
back to school, after having
daughters Jasmine, 4, and
Edihe, 2, and needing to return
to work. “It was 2015 when I
decided to go for it,” she said
of her final successful push to
pass the GED exam.
Balancing act
The decision has been a
difficult balancing act with
work and family, but Ponce
May said her husband has
always been willing to work
long hours in support of
her dreams. Often translat-
ing for friends, Ponce May
said, some people asked why
she wasn’t doing something
like helping non-English
patients communicate at a
hospital, which gave her an
idea.
“I see a lot of people not
speaking English,” she said.
“My mom doesn’t speak
English. It’s really hard to
communicate with a doctor or
a nurse.”
Ponce May turns 28
on Tuesday and estimates
another three years to
finish her prerequisites and
the medical-assisting pro-
gram. But her message to
other graduates Friday was
simple.
“It doesn’t matter how
long it takes,” she said. “Just
go for it.”
