North Coast Prevention Works, in partnership with the
Clatsop County Juvenile Department, hosted the 2017 Astoria
and Warrenton Youth Recognition Awards Banquet at the Loft
at the Red Building in Astoria on May 25.
Six youths — Alma Bolanos, Abigail Danen, Jeff Laf-
ferty, Nayeli Lopez, Landree Miethe and Jadelynn Picker-
ing — were recognized for being an example to the commu-
nity through their excellence and leadership. Their stories of
strength and perseverance were shared in front of more than
50 guests.
In addition, three adults — Mike Davis, Carrie Kaull and
Michael McClure — were awarded Asset Builder Awards for
going above and beyond in making a positive difference in the
lives of youth in the community.
Prevention Works was founded in 2009 to promote com-
munity-level change in the prevention of substance abuse, and
utilizes a variety of strategies to engage the community by
encouraging education, prevention and enforcement.
Meetings are open to the public and are held at 3:30 p.m. on
the third Thursday of every month in the commission chamber
at Warrenton City Hall, 225 S. Main Ave. . For information,

Encore Dance Studio holds
dance recital showcase
SEASIDE — In honor of its 21st anniversary, Encore
Dance Studio is holding a dance recital showcase Tuesday
through Thursday at the Seaside Civic and Convention Cen-
ter. The event includes a silent auction benefi ting Encore’s
nonprofi t Performing Arts Foundation.
Tuesday night’s celebration is a free Hip Hop Dance Party
beginning at 5:45 p.m. All ages and levels are invited to come
learn some steps. Encore’s adults, cheerleaders and tumbling
students begin their performance at 6:30 p.m., followed by the
studio’s solo performers.
Wednesday night’s performance begins at 6:30 p.m., fea-
turing students from Encore’s Warrenton studio, and includ-
ing dance routines by all ages and of several genres and levels.
Encore’s Gearhart studio students hit the stage Thursday, with
dance routines and a musical theat er showcase of “Aladdin!”
Tuesday and Wednesday are both ticketed events. General
admission is $10 online or $15 at the door; children age 10
and younger, and seniors age 65 and older, are free. Tickets
