For those not able to take
her art class at Knappa High
School, they can learn paint-
ing from Janet Sheridan on the
weekends in downtown Asto-
ria. But bring your own bottle.
Sheridan and her husband,
Len, recently opened Paint
with a Pint, a storefront born
from her events of the same
name at Fort George Brewery.
Like a teacher lecturing
from her easel at the front of
class, Sheridan takes up to
40 visitors at a time through
the step-by-step creation of
16-by-20-inch painting. Cus-
tomers bring their own drinks,
although Sheridan said she is
working on a liquor license to
sell on premises.
Sheridan moved to Oregon
several years ago from Phila-
delphia, where she attended
the Tyler School of Art at Tem-
ple University and later started
teaching, and almost got a job
at a paint-and-sip business.
“I loved the concept, but
the timing wasn’t right,” she
said. “And then I got the job
at Knappa, and the whole time
I kept thinking, ‘Man, Asto-
ria would be such an awesome
spot for a paint and sip.’”
Last March, Sheridan made
contact with Fort George
co-owner Jack Harris and had
her first paint-and-sip class a
year ago. “And from there, it
just kind of took off.”
Sheridan, who’s built up
the art program in Knappa
over the past four years, said
she’s continuing the events at
Fort George and trying to bal-
ance her two professions. “I’ll

remain at Knappa next year,
then I’ll take it a year at a time,”
she said, adding she hopes to
hire a backup instructor.
Sheridan said she and Len,
both first-time business own-
ers, are learning the ins and
outs of creating a website and
marketing the business. Paint
with a Pint, located in the for-
mer Gypsy’s Whimsy at 1139
Commercial St., opens from
4 to 8 p.m. Fridays and Sat-
urdays, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sundays, as well as doing pri-
vate events.
Mart Liikane said he, son
Kaleva and a friend pulled
in around midnight to the
Port of Astoria’s West Moor-
ing Basin, hoping to refuel
their fishing boat, Two Sis-
ters, before towing Kaleva’s
recently acquired sailboat,
the Turtledove, to Hoquiam,
Washington.
The fueling dock was
closed, so the sailors spent
the night at a slip in the north-
eastern corner of the marina,
the Turtledove tied to the Two
Sisters, hoping to refuel in the
morning. But they woke early
Thursday to find the Turtle-
dove listing on its side against
the Two Sisters, both boats
high and dry on a sand bar.
The event is a com-
mon one at the west marina,
where the Port plans to spend
$323,000 dredging over the
next year.
While the Port faces a sea
lion occupation of the docks
in its east marina, the west has
been silting in, leaving some
docks on the north and south
end laying on the mud at low

tide. Port Executive Director
Jim Knight said the Port has
not dredged the west marina
in 11 years, and that sediment
accumulation is now threat-
ening docks.
The Port has esti-
mated the west basin needs
600,000 cubic yards of sed-
iment removed, at a cost
of between $600,000 and
$720,000. Knight said the
Port plans to phase the
dredging of the marina over
the next two to three years,
dredging half of the marina
this year. The $323,000
the Port plans to spend in
the coming year includes
$50,000 from the Federal
Emergency Management
Agency to help recover
from storms in December
2015.
Knight said the Port
recently learned the soils in
the marina are clean enough
to allow the Port to dispose
of the sediment in the river,
rather than using an upland
disposal site.
“This disposal method
is much less expensive and
will save the Port hundreds of
thousands of dollars,” Knight
said.
Knight said the Port is
gathering bids and complet-
ing dredging permits, which
will determine the final cost
of dredging. The dredge sea-
son occurs in winter.
