‘What was a memorable summer job?’
THE DAILY ASTORIAN // QUESTION OF THE WEEK
“I worked as a parking person for
the Taste of Tacoma once, standing
outside in the 95 degree heat, direct-
ing the cars. I got really burned. Two
dogs were in a car with the windows
opened just a crack, so I called the police
and squirted water inside the car. The owners
were found, and the dogs were saved.”
“I sold ice cream
on an ice cream
truck. That was fun.
It was one of my
fi rst jobs. And, I got
to try the ice cream, which
was nice. It didn’t take much
selling effort with the kids.”
“Grooming
poodles. A lot
of baths, blow
drying, then
clippers and scis-
sors. I did other dogs,
too, and combed a lot of
hair out of collies.”

Oct. 1, 1943 — May 14, 2017
William Lee (Bill) Waddell , 65, of Seaside,
Oregon, passed away on April 13, 2017, in
Nehalem.
Bill was born in Portland, Oregon, on March
15, 1952. His parents were William Custer and
Anne Waddell. He married Jeanie Marie Malm-
berg on March 28, 1975. They later divorced.
They had two children, Magnolia Wolkoff and
Ula Druliner, both of Portland, Oregon.
Bill spent most of his life working in and
enjoying the outdoors. He worked as a painter,
logger and on a drag boat and Japanese fac-
tory ship in Alaska. The crew had great fun try-
ing to get him to eat a bowl of raw salmon eggs
for breakfast like they did. He worked with his
friend Brian Wheeler, cutting cedar and other
forest products.
He enjoyed hunting, picking mushroom, fi sh-
ing and cutting wood with his brother, Ken. He
loved fi shing so much he wanted to name one of
his children “Trout.” He is fondly remembered
by his family and friends as a man with a sense
of humor and tremendous energy.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents,
William Custer and Anne Waddell; sisters,
Donna Stern and Sheree Larson; brother, Denny
Waddell; and nephews, Jeff Waddell and Danny
Miller.
Bill is survived by his daughters, Magnolia
Wolkoff and Ula Druliner; sons-in-law, Shean
Wolkoff and Brian Druliner; grandchildren,
Jackson and Keelan Druliner; brother, Ken,
and sister-in-law, Chandra, Waddell; sister-in-
law, Alice Waddell; brother-in-law, Mark Lar-
son; nieces, Anandhy Waddell, Melanie Harper,
Kamala Clark, Leena Waddell and Valerie Wad-
dell; nephews, Mark Waddell, Donny Miller and
David Miller; and grand-nieces and nephews.
We want to thank the staff at Providence
Medical Center, Portland, and Nehalem Bay
Home for their excellent care and love during
Bill’s illness.
A memorial service and celebration of life
will be held in Astoria, on May 21, 2017, at 2
p.m., at his brother Ken Waddell’s house on
Saddle Mountain Road.
