Seaside Heights Elementary School students participated in the Daughters of the American Revolution school contests. This year’s theme was “Celebrate 100 Years of Our National Parks.” On May 1, at the school’s assembly, Astoria Chapter DAR recognized this year’s participants for the American History Essay, Mayte Jantes-Becerra and Raine Chan. First place went to Jasmine Schermerhorn, who received an American History Essay medal. For their entries in the Junior American Citizens Contest, Cre- ative Expression Stamp Design Category, Keira Rodriguez and Raine Chan were honored. Jantes-Becerra was the first place chapter winner, and she also placed first at the state level for her entry. She and her parents have been invited to attend the Oregon State Society DAR conference in May. Each of the girls received a gift bag with their certificates, and books commemorating national parks. During the event, Jan Jackson, convention co-chairwoman and treasurer of Seaside Elks Lodge, was awarded the Ore- gon State Elks Association’s Officer of the Year. Approximately 750 Elks, guests and honored dignitaries attended the three-day conven- tion, which provided updates on the Elks’ many projects and charities.
