Lady Fishermen win Meet of Champions
The Daily Astorian
SALEM — The finish line to the
2017 season is in sight for the Astoria
girls track team. And it’s looking very
much like a third straight state title on
the way for the Lady Fishermen.
Astoria sent a handful of athletes to
compete in the annual Meet of Cham-
pions, Saturday at Willamette Univer-
sity. And the Lady Fish scored big, win-
ning the team title on the girls’ side in
the big meet, which features the best
athletes in the state, competing against
each other for one final time before the
state meet in Eugene later this month.
The Astoria girls finished with a
whopping 96 team points, far ahead of
second place Molalla (63.5) and Philo-
math (55).
Newport won the boys’ team title,
with Astoria seventh.
Once again, junior Darian Hageman
was Astoria’s big winner, as she took
first in three events and placed second
in a fourth.
Hageman scored her usual victories
in the high jump (5-feet), long jump
(16-11½) and triple jump (36-10); and
cleared 9-8 for second in the pole vault.
Shrida Sharma was fifth in the pole
vault, at 9-0.
On the track, Astoria scored big
points in the sprints, where sophomore
Gracie Cummings was third in the 100
meters and fourth in the 200 meters,
and sister Natalie took fifth in the 100
and seventh in the 200.
Sophomore Nara Van De Grift was
fourth in the 300-meter hurdles; junior
McKenzie Burnett placed fifth in the
3,000 meters in a personal best 11 min-
utes, 21.49 seconds, and seventh in the
1,500 meters (PR 5:18.25).
Sophomore Samantha Hems-
ley took sixth in the 800 meters (PR
2:32.42).
The highest finish on the track was
in the 400-meter relay, where Gracie
Cummings, Andrea Harris, Van De
Grift and Natalie Cummings teamed
for a 50.71 to place second behind
Molalla (50.68).
The Cummings sisters, Hemsley
and Van De Grift ran to a fourth place
showing in the 1,600-meter relay.
Seaside sophomore Gretchen Hoek-
stre had a personal best toss of 40 feet, 4
inches for second place in the shot put;
and a PR throw of 114-4 for second in
the discus.
On the boys’ side, Astoria junior
Tim Barnett had a personal best day in
all three of his events, taking second in
the shot put (51-0½), third in the discus
(150-0) and fifth in the javelin (164-10).
Astoria’s Lucas Caruana won the
1,500 in a personal best 4:05.03, and
placed fifth in the 800 (2:03.85).
Elsewhere, junior Michael Kee was
fifth in the 110 hurdles.
Seaside’s Juneau Meyer took fifth
in the 400 (season-best 51.31); Jack-
son Januik was sixth (PR 4:13.24) and
Rafi Sibony seventh (PR 4:13.58) in
the 1,500.
Warrenton’s Tyler Whitaker placed
fifth in the long jump, sixth in the triple
jump with a season-best leap of 40-4 ½,
and sixth in the high jump (5-8).

Blodgett tosses no-no; Warriors win 13th

VERNONIA — Warrenton took a break
from league play with a Saturday trip to Ver-
nonia, where the Warriors hammered the Log-
gers 4-0 behind a no-hit shutout from pitcher
Niqui Blodgett.
The Warriors stranded 10 base runners, and
led just 1-0 after six innings before scoring
three runs in the top of the seventh.
Natalie Duncan had three of Warrenton’s
eight hits, including a double, and leadoff
batter Landree Miethe was 2-for-3 with two
runs scored.
As only the third Warrenton pitcher to ever
throw a no-hitter (joining Allison Mattila and
Stacey Moore) Blodgett had a double and
drove in two runs to help her cause for Warren-
ton, which improved to 13-3 overall, the most
wins for a Warrenton team since the Warriors
won 21 in 2004.
Warriors 10, Tigers 3
WARRENTON — Clatskanie scored the
first run, but Warrenton scored the next 10,
as the Warriors cruised to a 10-3 win over the
Tigers in a Lewis & Clark League softball
game Friday.
Warrenton pitcher Niqui Blodgett threw
a complete game, allowing six hits with five
strikeouts and six walks. She also had two dou-
bles and three RBIs at the plate, while Melia
Kapua and Dani Bue drove in two runs apiece.
Warrenton jumped over Clatskanie in the
league standings, and is now just a half-game
behind Portland Adventist (4-3). The No.
12-ranked Warriors host Rainier (14-1 over-
all) Tuesday, and a doubleheader with Portland
Christian (0-12) Friday.
Loggers pound the ’Hounds

KNAPPA — The first-place
Knappa Loggers were perfect in
just about every phase of the game
Friday in a doubleheader with last-
place Gaston, played at Teevin Field
(the Loggers were the visitor in both
games).
In the 11-1, 13-0 sweep over
the Greyhounds, Michal Goodman
threw a no-hitter in Game 1 (Knap-
pa’s second no-hitter of the
season), with Kaleb Miller
and Eli Takalo combining
on a two-hit shutout in the
second game.
In five at-bats on the
day, the Loggers scored 24
runs (scoring in every inning but
one), collected 20 hits and had 18
stolen bases, 11 in Game 1.
The Loggers ran the bases at will,
scoring on back-to-back squeeze
bunts in Game 1, in which the run
scored on each attempt, and Reuben
Cruz and Dale Takalo both reached
safely on the bunts.
Goodman struck out 10 with two
walks in the Game 1 no-hitter, while
Jason Miller was 2-for-4 with four
RBIs and five steals. Eli Takalo was
2-for-2, and eight of Knappa’s nine
starters had hits.
In Game 2, Kaleb Miller pitched
two innings (three strikeouts, two
walks), and Eli Takalo tossed the last
three (eight strikeouts, no walks) to
pick up the win.
Dale Takalo led the hit parade,
going 4-for-4 with five RBIs; Mason
Hoover was 2-for-3 with a dou-
ble and three runs scored; Cruz was
1-for-1, scored three times and was
hit by a pitch and walked twice;
Andrew Goozee, Colton Wei-
rup and Kaleb Miller all had
doubles; and Logan Flues
scored his first varsity run.
“We looked like a better
team this week than the
week before,” said Knappa
coach Jeff Miller. “We hit the
ball better and we were more aggres-
sive on the bases.”
Pitching-wise, “we have six guys
who can throw, and there’s not a big
separation between all six. They just
give us different styles, different
speeds and different options to go to
when we need it.”
The Loggers (8-1 in league) play
a nonleague game Thursday at Clats-
kanie, and can lock up the league
title next week with three games
against Vernonia (3-3).

Warren HR lifts Tigers
past Warriors in 4-1 win
The Daily Astorian
WARRENTON — The Warren-
ton Warriors continue to close in on
their first win, but victory eluded the
Warriors Friday at Huddleston Field,
where one swing of the bat helped
Clatskanie score a 4-1 win.
Caleb Warren’s three-run homer in
the top of the fifth snapped a 1-1 tie
and led to the Tiger victory, as Clats-
kanie improves to 4-2 in the Lewis
& Clark League standings, while the
Warriors dropped to 0-6.
“We’re close,” said Warrenton
coach Lennie Wolfe. “We’re defend-
ing well (no errors) and we’ve turned
a corner at the plate. Jacob (Mor-
row) threw a great game — the worst
thing you can say is that he had one
‘mistake’ pitch,” on the home run by
Warren.
