features artists and experiences
Free program offers practical
advice on how to talk to doctors
Gerry Swenson has been a consistent figure at Clatsop
Community College for nearly the entire history of the
college, starting as a mathematics instructor in 1965.
She was recently recognized for her 50th year on the board of
the Clatsop Community College Foundation, and has seen the
foundation grow from raising around $3,000 a year for schol-
arships into supporting scholarships, equipment and academic
programs.
Swenson, who received the college’s Spirit of Clatsop Award
in 2008, has long been part of the foundation’s Arts & Experi-
ences dinner and auction, a primary fundraiser for scholarships.
“Several years ago we decided our event and efforts should serve
two purposes: raise money for student scholarships and help pro-
mote local artists,” she said.
This year’s fundraiser is May 6 at the Astoria Golf and Coun-
try Club, and features both regional artists and experiences,
including trips to Cortona, Italy, and Bali, Indonesia.

WARRENTON — A program, “How To Talk To Your Doc-
tor,” practical tips that can be used to communicate better with
healthcare providers, takes place from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the
Astoria Golf and Country Club, 33445 Sunset Beach Lane.
The featured speaker is Helen Osborne, who helps others
communicate health information in ways that patients, caregiv-
ers and the public can understand. She speaks, podcasts, writes
and teaches about health literacy to audiences across the coun-

This free program is open to patients, their caregivers and
families, and no registration is required. Refreshments will be
served.

Fishing Derby Fundraiser set for
Saturday at Cullaby Lake

The Fisheries Technology class at Astoria High School holds
its seventh Annual Aquatic Biology Program Fishing Derby
Fundraiser on Saturday at Coffenbury Lake in Fort Stevens State
Park. Ticket sales and derby hours begin at 7 a.m., and the derby
ends at 4 p.m.
About 70 color-tagged 1-4 pound rainbow trout, reared by
students in an on-campus hatchery, will be released into the
lake. Fishermen can purchase tickets for $10 each at the lake on
derby day from AHS Aquatic Biology Program students to earn
the right to redeem these specially marked fish for prizes, which
have been donated by local sponsors. Any additional businesses
interested in becoming a sponsor can contact Lee Cain at lcain@

Fisheries Technology is the culminating class in a two-year
Aquatic Biology Program. Because of its hands-on, real-world
approach to learning, the projects and field trips require materials
and expenses above what the current Science Department budget
can cover, so fundraising is a necessity.
Thrivent Financial is holding a free workshop, “Savvy Social
Security Planning,” at two times and locations on Thursday.
The first event is at 10:30 a.m. in the Conference Room at the
Best Western Bayfront Hotel, 555 Hamburg Ave. in Astoria; the
second is at 6:30 p.m. in the Conference Room at Holiday Inn
Express & Suites, 34 N. Holladay Drive in Seaside.
The workshop explains what Baby Boomers need to know
to maximize retirement income. Join Linda Moreland, a certi-
fied financial planner, who will talk about recent legislation that
affects some Social Security strategies for those born before
1954. Thrivent Financial guest speaker Jason Susee covers
Social Security and strategies for maximizing benefits; the ideal
time to apply for Social Security; and ways to minimize taxes on
Social Security benefits.
