Evelyn was a member of the Columbia River
Maritime Museum, and a past member of the
Astoria Golf and Country Club.
Evelyn is survived by her brother, Laverne,
and sister-in-law, Judy Leqve, of Pine Island,
Minnesota; surrogate children, Pamela and
Michael Randall of Norfolk, England; and her
dear friends Gary and Jeanie Vasey of Seaside,
Oregon. She was preceded in death by her hus-
band, Arthur L. Smith.
Interment at Ocean View Cemetery in War-
renton, Oregon, will be private.
Remembrances may be made to the Columbia
River Maritime Museum in care of Hughes-Ran-
som Mortuary, 220 N. Holiday Drive, Seaside,
OR 97138, who is in charge of the arrangements.

Body found in Chinook
was Portland woman

A body that washed ashore
in Chinook in early March
belonged to Ha Khuong Vo
Dang, a 28-year-old Portland
woman.
Vo D ang, who went by
“Kay,” disappeared on May 1,
2016, while paddleboarding at
a beach in Columbia County .
Search and rescue workers pre-
sumed Vo Dang drowned, but
were never able to recover her
body. A p eninsula man discov-
ered her body in March while
walking on a small beach near
Third Street in Chinook.
The Pacifi c County Sher-
iff’s Offi ce confi rmed her
identity and notifi ed her fam-
ily earlier this month, C hief
Criminal Deputy Pat Matlock
said.
“We were very happy to
fi nally bring a resolution to Vo
Dang’s family,” Matlock said.
According to a Columbia
County investigation report,
Vo Dang and her friend sun-
bathed and shared a six-pack
of beer. The man continued
to doze, while Vo Dang went
paddleboarding. She was not
wearing a lifejacket, deputies
said.
Around 4 p.m., a woman
approached Vo Dang’s friend.
She told him Vo Dang had
fallen off of her paddleboard
and appeared to be struggling
in the water. Around the same
time, another man called 911.
He said he had seen a woman
fall in the water, and she had
not come out.
“The wind was strong. It
was blowing the board away.
She tired herself out swim-
ming after it, obviously,” wit-
ness Nathaniel Harrack told
news channel KGW.
Columbia County depu-
ties searched for her from land.
They also brought in a boat.
“But by the time they
arrived, she was gone,” Mat-
lock said. “She was about half-
way across the river.”

• At 4:09 p.m. Friday,
Frank Nimz, a homeless man
originally from Seaside, was
arrested by the Warrenton
Police Department on South-
east 19th Street for assault. He
allegedly punched a woman,
who had a black eye that was
swollen shut. The woman,
Suzane Snodgrass, 47, home-
less from Seaside, was arrested
for violating probation.
• At 2:15 p.m. Monday,
Chad McClour, 24, of Cullaby
Lake, was arrested by the War-
renton Police Department on
the 60 block Southeast Eighth
Street for two counts of reck-
less endangerment, two counts
of harassment and two counts
of disorderly conduct. He
allegedly punched a woman in
the back of her head as she was
driving a car. A child was sit-
ting in the back seat.
• At 3:44 a.m. Tuesday,
Tammie Mayfi eld, 47, of Rain-
ier, Washington, was arrested
by the Warrenton Police
Department on the 500 block
of Seventh Street for assault.
She allegedly broke a beer bot-
tle against a man’s forehead.
A short, eventful life
Vo Dang lived on the East
Coast after immigrating to the
U.S. from Vietnam, according
to her social media profi les.
She earned a nursing degree in
Connecticut and then worked
in North Dakota. She moved to
Oregon to take a job at a Salem
hospital. Profi le photos show a
petite, smiling young woman
who enjoyed being outdoors.
With a high of 81 degrees,
May 1 was one of the fi rst truly
warm days of the year in the
Portland area. Vo Dang spent
the afternoon on a fi rst date
with a Portland man. After
renting paddleboarding gear,
she and the man drove to Col-
lins Beach, a popular spot on
Sauvie Island. The island is in
the Columbia River, about 10
miles northwest of Portland.

of Seaside, was arrested by
the Seaside Police Department
on South Holladay Drive near
Avenue C for driving under
the infl uence of intoxicants.
His blood alcohol content was
0.05 percent. Boat allegedly
said he had been drinking ear-
lier and the offi cer noticed he
was impaired.
• At 5:02 a.m. Sunday,
Mathew Brown Scott, 28, of
Eugene, was arrested by the

Evelyn M. (Leqve) Smith, 91, of Seaside,
Oregon, died Wednesday, April 19, in Seaside.
She was born Dec. 1, 1925, in Rochester, Min-
nesota, to Sander and Lillian Leqve. She was
raised on the family farm and graduated from
Rochester High School in 1943.
After the end of the World War II, Evelyn
met Arthur L. Smith in San Francisco, Califor-
nia. They married Nov. 8, 1947, and resided in
Yakima, Washington. In 1968, they moved to
Warrenton, Oregon, and lived at Sunset Lake
until Arthur’s death in 2004. Evelyn then moved
to Vancouver, Washington, for a short time
before returning to Seaside.
She was a homemaker who loved to garden,
and will be remembered by all who knew her
for her love of fl owers. Also, she loved birds of
all types and fed them daily until the day she
passed. She made friends easily, and will be
