According to the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association,
you should watch for adult fl eas on your pet or in
your house, fl ea excrement or “fl ea dirt” on your pet’s
skin that turns reddish in water, irritated skin and/or
excessive itching, or fl ea eggs that look like salt-sized
white ovals.
You can treat adult fl eas with topical or oral monthly
adulticides and eggs and larvae with Insect Growth
Regulators (IGRs) and Insect Development Inhibitors
(IDIs). Your veterinarian may recommend a combined
integrated control program. Both naturally-based
pyrethrins and the synthetic pyrethroids are typically
used in treatments. Keep in mind that while the
synthetic is safe for dogs, it is very toxic for cats.
Always check dosage requirements and watch for
potential interactions with other medications your pet
is taking. And always, if you have any questions about
fl eas or fl ea treatment, contract your veterinarian.
Your vet is the true expert.
