Pence says US stands by ally
Japan on North Korea problem
TOKYO — U.S. Vice President Mike Pence assured Japanese
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe today that the United States stands “100
percent” behind its anchor ally in Asia in working to defuse risks
from North Korea’s nuclear program.
Pence struck a stern tone as he began talks with Abe and other
Japanese leaders after arriving at a U.S. naval base from South
Korea.
“We appreciate the challenging times in which the people of
Japan live with increasing provocations from across the Sea of
Japan,” Pence said. “We are with you 100 percent.”
The Trump administration has signaled a more forceful U.S.
stance toward North Korea’s recent missile tests and threats, includ-
ing a warning from Trump that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un
has “gotta behave.”
On Monday, Pence traveled to the tense Demilitarized Zone
dividing North and South Korea, where he warned North Korea’s
leaders that after years of testing the U.S. and South Korea with its
nuclear ambitions, “the era of strategic patience is over.”

OxyContin pills are arranged for a photo at a pharmacy in
Montpelier, Vt. Two-thirds of the respondents in a Yahoo/
Marist poll released Monday said opioid drugs such as
Vicodin or OxyContin are “riskier” to use than pot, even
when the pain pills are prescribed by a doctor.

CLEVELAND — The man who randomly killed a Cleveland
retiree and posted video of the crime on Facebook shot himself to
death today in Pennsylvania, police said.
Pennsylvania State Police said Steve Stephens was spotted this
morning in Erie County, in the state’s northwest corner. Authori-
ties say officers tried to pull Stephens over and, after a brief pur-
suit, he shot and killed himself.
He was wanted on an aggravated murder charge in the shooting
death of a 74-year-old man who was picking up aluminum cans on
Sunday after spending Easter with his family.
Stephens posted a video of himself killing Robert Godwin Sr.,
a former foundry worker who had 10 children, police said. In it, he
said, “I snapped, I just snapped.”
Stephens, 37, shared a recording on Sunday of himself announc-
ing his plan to kill someone, then two minutes later posted another
video of himself shooting and killing Godwin, Facebook said. A few
minutes after that, he went live and confessed, the company said.
The company said it disabled Stephen’s account within 23
minutes of receiving the first report about the video of the fatal
shooting and two hours after receiving any report.
Facebook has since announced it was launching a review for
reporting harmful content.
dren and pregnant women using pot to treat medical conditions,
according to a new Yahoo/Marist poll released Monday.
Two-thirds of the respondents in the telephone survey said
opioid drugs such as Vicodin or OxyContin are “riskier” to use
than pot, even when the pain pills are prescribed by a doctor.
Only 1 in 5 said marijuana was riskier than opioids. The rest
weren’t sure.
Every day, an overdose of prescription opioids or heroin kills
91 people, and legions more are brought back from the brink of
death. Some 2 million Americans are thought to be hooked on
the pills.
Last month, President Donald J. Trump appointed an opioid
commission to look into the problem.
Marijuana by itself is not fatal. Doctors technically don’t pre-
scribe it for pain or other purposes but most states that allow
medical marijuana do require patients to get a doctor’s written
recommendation to purchase it to treat their conditions.
Among those answering the Yahoo/Marist poll, 83
percent said the drug should be legal nationally for medical
treatment.
But 70 percent said it is not acceptable for pregnant women to
use marijuana to reduce nausea or pain.
VARNER, Ark. — Arkansas officials vowed to carry out
a double execution later this week after the U.S. Supreme
Court delivered a setback to the state’s plan to resume capi-
tal punishment for the first time in nearly 12 years with a rul-
ing sparing an inmate just minutes before his death warrant was
set to expire.
The court’s decision was the second time Don Davis had
been granted a reprieve shortly before execution — he was
within hours of death in 2010. It capped a chaotic day of legal
wrangling in state and federal courts Monday as Arkansas tried
to clear obstacles to carrying out its first executions since 2005.
Davis had already been served a last meal of fried chicken,
rolls, beans, mashed potatoes and strawberry cake hours, and
witnesses were being moved toward the execution chamber
when the Supreme Court ruled just minutes before Davis’ death
warrant expired at midnight.
Davis was sentenced to death for the 1990 death of Jane
Daniel in Rogers, Arkansas. The woman was killed in her home
after Davis broke in and shot her with a .44-caliber revolver he
found there.
Gov. Asa Hutchinson had set an aggressive schedule of as
many as eight executions by the end of April, when the state’s
supply of a key lethal injection drug expires. Davis and Bruce
Ward were supposed to be the first two of those Monday but
Ward received a stay of execution and the state did not appeal
the decision. The state did challenge a stay granted to Davis
but the last-minute U.S. Supreme Court ruling ensured that he
would not enter the death chamber Monday.
Archaeologists find 1,000 statues
in tomb in Egypt’s Luxor
CAIRO — Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered more
than 1,000 statues and 10 sarcophagi in an ancient noble’s tomb
on the west bank of the Nile River in Luxor.
The Antiquities Ministry said today that the tomb was built
for a judge during the New Kingdom period, from roughly
1,500 to 1,000 B.C.
The tomb comprised an open courtyard leading to two
halls, one containing four ancient coffins and the other
including a chamber that houses six. The head of archaeolog-
ical mission, Mostafa el-Waziri, says another chamber was
found containing the statues, which depict kings from differ-
ent dynasties.
He said archaeologists expect to find even more statues as
the dig continues.
