Seaside comes together for baby Daxton on Saturday
By REBECCA HERREN
The Daily Astorian
SEASIDE —The Sea-
side Fire and Rescue Depart-
ment will host a spaghetti feed
dinner and fundraiser for the
Bruce and Ashley Olson fam-
ily from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday
at the fire station. Cost for the
dinner is $10 for adults and
$25 for a family. A silent auc-
tion will start at 7 p.m.
In October 2016, the
Olsons welcomed a happy and
healthy baby boy named Dax-
ton to their growing family. At
the age of 3 months, Daxton
was diagnosed with an inoper-
able brain tumor classified as
astrocytoma.
According to the National
Cancer Institute, childhood
astrocytoma can be benign
or malignant; causes are
unknown; and signs and symp-
toms are different for each
child. Astrocytoma is a tumor
that starts in star-shaped brain
cells called astrocytes, and is a
type of glial cell.
Glial cells hold nerve cells
in place, bring food and oxy-
gen to the cells, and help pro-
tect them from disease and
infection. Gliomas are tumors
that form from glial cells and
an astrocytoma is a type of gli-
oma, the most common type of
glioma diagnosed in children.
However, baby Daxton’s
astrocytoma has been a mys-
tery to the medical team at
OHSU Doernbecher Chil-
dren’s Hospital in Portland,
as well as with medical teams
from around the country at this
particular type of growth.
While initial tests proved
inconclusive, his doctors
believe the tumor is growing at
a slow rate. In February, Dax-
ton began a 15-month chemo-
therapy treatment plan, caus-
ing the family to travel back

from all over the city that will
be available for the silent auc-
tion,” Dugan said.
Both Chief Joey Daniels
and Dugan commented on the
close connection the Olson
family has with the fire depart-
ment. Bruce’s father Rick
Olson was a local logger and
volunteer fireman — then cap-
tain — for more than 20 years.
Following their father’s exam-
ple, Bruce and his brother
Jason joined the department
right out of high school and
volunteered for about five
years.
“And that’s the whole rea-
son why we wanted to do this
and help the family — they’re
one of our own,” added Dugan.
Another way to help with
the added medical costs the
Olsons have incurred is to
donate to Dimes for Daxton, an
funding site organized by fam-
ily friend Jon Rahl. “Dimes for
Daxton is a small gesture that
can help ensure this family is
able to keep up with all of their
bills while giving as much
attention as possible to their
little guy and two other chil-
dren,” said Rahl. “The family
is extremely thankful for all of
the thoughts, prayers and good
vibes you are able to send their
way.”

cue fire station is located at 150
