Rather than helping groom
aspiring writers at the col-
lege level, Bengel said, he’ll
have the advantage of working
with trained professionals who
already have a voice. Part of
his imprint on Coast Weekend,
he said, will be to increase the
journalistic substance of Coast
Weekend.
“We want the writing to
sound less like publicist writ-
ing, less press release-y,” he
said. “Obviously it’s going to
be replete with press releases
and all of that, but when it
comes to the actual feature sto-

more of an edge to it.”
CHICAGO — A passenger dragged from a United Express
flight suffered a “significant” concussion and broken nose,
and he lost two front teeth, one of his lawyers said today.
Dr. David Dao has been discharged from a hospital but
he will require reconstructive surgery, said attorney Thomas
Demetrio, whose law firm is representing the 69-year-old
Kentucky physician.
Dao was removed from the plane Sunday after he refused
to give up his seat on the full flight from Chicago to Louisville.
Demetrio said he likely will file a lawsuit on Dao’s behalf,
adding that airlines — and United in particular — have long
“bullied” passengers.
The video of a passenger being dragged by an officer from
a United Express flight shined an unwanted spotlight on the
little-known police force that guards Chicago’s two main air-
ports and could threaten the agency’s future.
Chicago’s aviation officers are not part of the regular police
force, unlike in many other big cities. They get less training
than regular officers and can’t carry firearms inside the air-
ports. Three of them were put on leave amid outrage over how
they treated the passenger.
The City Council is looking for answers about the embar-
rassing video that has been seen around the world. At the top
of the list of questions is whether the airport officers even had
the legal authority to board the plane, said Alderman Michael
Zalewski, who leads the council’s aviation committee.
Since college, Erick Ben-
gel has jumped back and forth
between the hard news and
features sections of the papers
he’s worked at.
A reporter for the EO
Media Group since 2013, Ben-
gel was recently named the
features editor of Coast Week-
end arts and entertainment
tabloid, Weekend Break sec-
tion and Our Coast magazine.
Although learning in a trial by
fire, Bengel said the transition
feels natural.
“I think arts and culture is
kind of my home,” he said.
“Sometimes when I write news
stories, straight newsy style,
I feel like I’m trying to adopt

Phones and social media turn
consumers into whistleblowers
New reporter joins Astorian, South County publications
NEW YORK — Look out, Corporate America. Custom-
ers armed with smartphones and video cameras are watching
when you screw up.
The viral video of a ticketed passenger dragged forcefully
off a United flight is only the latest example of bad behavior
exposed in the age of social media.
In February, Uber came under fire after a driver posted
video of CEO Travis Kalanick berating him. Earlier, a Com-
cast technician was shown in a video sleeping on a custom-
er’s couch, and an audio recording chronicled one man’s her-
culean efforts to drop Comcast service; they are among the
embarrassing customer complaints that ultimately forced
improvements . FedEx had to respond after video showed a
driver carelessly throwing a package with a computer mon-
itor over the front gate. Beyond the corporate sphere, smart-
phone videos of police brutality have prompted protests and
investigations.
Not long ago, such incidents might have gotten a mention
on the local news at most, and quickly disappeared. But smart-
phone cameras and social media have democratized informa-
tion and shifted power to consumers. Companies can no lon-
ger sweep complaints under the rug.
“That’s something a lot of companies just don’t get,” said
Paul Argenti, a professor of corporate communications at
Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business. “Companies still oper-
ate as if they can hide things and make believe something
didn’t happen.”

ACLU sues for information
related to Trump travel bans
CHICAGO — The American Civil Liberties Union has
filed more than a dozen lawsuits nationwide seeking govern-
ment documents related to the implementation of the Trump
administration’s travel bans.
The organization announced efforts Wednesday to sue
for records from 14 Customs and Border Protection offices,
including in Chicago, Los Angeles and Houston.
The ACLU says it first sought details through Freedom of
Information Act requests, but government officials “failed to
substantively respond.”
CBP officials didn’t return a message Wednesday.
The organization is looking for documents showing how
the bans were carried out at airports. The lawsuits cover
Atlanta, Baltimore, Detroit, Boston, San Diego, San Fran-
cisco, Seattle, Miami, Tampa, Florida; Portland, Oregon; and
Tucson, Arizona.

SEASIDE — For a college
newspaper editor, being thrown
into a firestorm was quite an
experience.
Brenna Visser faced just that
when, as editor of the West-
ern Front — the weekly at
the Western Washington Uni-
versity — the president of the
Associated Students received
racially charged threats. What
ensued was three months of
competition with national news
outlets about race relations on
college campuses in the U.S.
“I was editor in chief at the
time when we were reporting
the fallout,” Visser said. “It was
a very emotional experience
dealing with something as vol-
atile as a racial threat.”
Visser earned her bache-
lor’s degree in journalism with
honors early this month and is
now the South County reporter
for the Gazette and The Daily
Astorian. A former intern at the
Skagit Valley Herald, a Wash-
ington daily, the Gazette will

college.
