First Lutheran
St. Mary, Star of the Sea
The Fifth Sunday in Lent is cel-
ebrated at First Lutheran Church,
725 33rd St., at the 8:30 and 11 a.m.
worship services. The installation of
council members takes place at both
worship services. Council members
are furnishing treats for the coffee
hours between and after services.
The Fun First @ First event is
“Seeds For the Community Gar-
den Sunday.” The garden plots are
small, so seeds for compact plants,
such as lettuce, spinach, bush beans,
bush squashes (zucchini, summer
squashes) and herbs are needed.
Pumpkins, corn or pale beans are not
appropriate.
At 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the Call
Committee meets with Susan Kintner
from the Synod office to receive the
names of candidates for the pastor’s
position.
The Scandinavian Workshop
begins at 10 a.m. Monday; Sea Scouts
meet at 5:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Stewardship Sew-
ing/quilters meet at 9:30 a.m., TOPS
meets at 5:30 p.m. and Pure Life Alli-
ance meets at 5:45 p.m.
The Midweek Lenten program
with members of Peace Lutheran
Church begins at 11:30 a.m. Wednes-
day, with a Morning Bible Study and
“Coloring the Way to the Cross,” fol-
lowed by the Soup Supper at 5:30
p.m., Sharing Time and “Coloring the
Way to the Cross” exercise at 6 p.m.
and the Midweek Lenten Worship at
6:30 p.m. The Senior Choir practice
begins at 7 p.m.

The Stations of the Cross are
being held at 6 p.m. today in the
St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic
Church, 1465 Grand Ave., followed
by a soup and bread supper in the
Star of the Sea School auditorium.
On Sunday, the Knights of Colum-
bus breakfast buffet takes place after
the 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. Masses.
Eggs, bacon or sausage, pancakes,
juice, coffee and assorted pastries are
available. The cost is $7 for adults,
$5 for seniors and students, or $15
for families with two adults. All are
welcome.

Grace Episcopal Church, 1545
Franklin Ave., observes the Fifth Sun-
day in Lent at both the 8 and 10 a.m.
services on Sunday. The First Sunday
of the month Lenten Labyrinth Walk
is available from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
A labyrinth introduction is offered at
3 p.m., upon request. It takes an aver-
age of 30 minutes to complete the
circle.
On Fridays during Lent, con-
templative music for listening and/
or walking the Stations of the Cross
is offered between 12:10 and 1 p.m.

nity Eckankar HU Sing takes place

Ecumenical Event
The public is invited to attend a
community-wide ecumenical event
in Astoria: The 50th Anniversary
of Martin Luther King Jr’s sermon/
speech, “Beyond Vietnam — A Time
to Break Silence,” which is being
held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Epis-
copal Church, 1545 Franklin Ave.
This event is intended to honor
and remember the life and death
of King, and to foster the work of
healing and unraveling racism and
oppression. The audio of King deliv-
ering the speech runs for 54 minutes.
A few of his favorite hymns are being
sung following the sermon, and visi-
tors are encouraged to remain after-
ward to sit quietly and meditate in the
candlelit church.
There is no charge for this event,
and childcare is available. For infor-
