Crowned: Judges evaluate ‘overall package’
Continued from Page 1A
More than beauty
The annual scholarship program
— celebrating its 67th year — is far
more than a beauty contest.
Program director Sandy New-
man said judges evaluate the “over-
all package,” with winners serv-
ing as ambassadors for the county
at parades, charitable and special
events.
Judges seek “somebody who’s
likable, can go with the flow,” New-
man said. “Great speaking skills are
very important.”
Garhofer entered her first contest
while an eighth-grader at Broadway
Middle School in Seaside. She was
named Miss Clatsop County Teen in
2013.
“Over the past six years I’ve
evolved into the woman I am,” she
said onstage after the show. “I am so
thankful for this organization.”
She was chosen among four Miss
Clatsop County contestants, joined
by Anna Kaim, Hayliehe Bell and
Kayla Warwood.
Garhofer is a student at North-
west Christian University. During
her winning talent display, she tap-
danced to “Emergency” by Icona
Pop and described her platform as
“Live Your Dash — Leave Your
Legacy.”
Garhofer also won service above
self, fitness and congeniality awards.
She was crowned by Alexis Mather,
who is Miss Oregon and the winner
of Miss North Coast Outstanding
Teen 2011.
Outstanding teen Sims wowed
judges with an emotional rendition
of composer Leonard Cohen’s “Hal-
lelujah,” while Ramsdell’s perfor-
mance of J.P. Cooper’s “We Were
Raised Under Gray Skies,” and a
platform of promoting school and
community music programs contrib-
uted to her success.
Scholarship funds
Along with recognizing the talent
of the county’s young women, Miss
Clatsop County Scholarship pro-
gram distributed thousands of dol-
lars in scholarship funds.
“I think the experience of inter-
viewing with a panel of judges for
10 minutes is invaluable,” Newman
said. “You have no idea what ques-
tions they are going to ask. They are
applying for a job of Miss Clatsop
County. Potentially Miss Oregon,
potentially Miss America.”
Contestants gain self-confidence
and skills in interviewing and public
speaking, Newman added. “Some of
these girls have been competing as
teens and now onstage today. In fact,
all four Misses competed as teens.
Seeing them grow is just amazing.”
Next up for competitors: the Miss
Oregon and Oregon’s Outstanding
Teen competition in Seaside at the
end of June.
“I will be going to Miss Oregon
at the end of June,” Garhofer said
as she enjoyed congratulations from
organizers, family and friends. “I am
so thankful for this opportunity! And
I cannot wait to represent Clatsop
County!”
McCormick was a commanding
officer on the wooden motor lifeboat
Triumph — stationed in Hammond
— in March 1938 when he rescued
a crew member who fell overboard.
He received the Gold Lifesaving
Medal for the rescue.
Jarmer, 56, of Portland, said her
grandfather did not talk about the
rescue much to her or her three sis-
ters, preferring to remember it as just
part of his job. She coordinated with
the crew to develop the ship’s crest,
which includes a salmon drawing
commemorating McCormick’s love
for fishing.
Top speeds
Near the time of McCormick’s
death at 85 in 1986, the new 110-foot
Island-class patrol boats were just
being commissioned. Three decades
later, the cutters are replacing many
of these boats.
“I think he’d be amazed at the
ship and everything it has on it,”
Jarmer said.
The most noticeable upgrade
from the Island-class is the ability to
maintain top speeds. Both boats can
reach speeds of roughly 30 knots, but
the 20-cylinder engine on the Senti-
nel-class cutter allows it to maintain
those speeds for a longer distance.
Three generators significantly reduce
the possibility of it losing power.
The cutter also holds a 26-foot
stern launch boat that can glide from
a lowered platform on the back of
the vessel into the water. Its ability
to slide into the water as opposed to
being lowered allows crew members
to use it on larger swells.
“We can get there farther and
faster and once we’re at a scene,
it makes it much easier to do law
enforcement,” said Lt. Mike Moy-
seowicz, the cutter’s commanding
officer.
Upgraded communication and
electronic capabilities allow the cut-
ter to function more independently,
allowing the crew to handle certain
tasks themselves rather than asking
questions of a nearby station over
radio.
“The technology just supersedes
any other platform in the Coast
Guard fleet,” electrician’s mate Pat
Connolly said. “It blows your mind
the stuff this boat can do.”
Upgrades to the living quarters
such as separated toilets and showers
make it easier for the cutter to incor-
porate men and women, Moyseo-
wicz said. Three pictures of McCor-
mick also adorn the wall next to the
mess tables.
Crew members said Saturday that
meeting McCormick’s family and
sailing past the site of the rescue was
a fitting last stop before the commis-
sioning ceremony.
“It really adds that much more of
a personal touch to it,” Moyseowicz
said. “For the crew, it adds that much
more camaraderie. It’s inspirational
to add that much more of his legacy.”
Blissett: Firefighter worked with many memorable firemen at the station
Continued from Page 1A
old, they wanted lots of repairs.
I closed in 1992.
Q: I heard something
about oil company execu-
tives getting worked up over
the station’s decor?
I painted whales on the
gas station building. They got
crazy. They said we’re tak-
ing your dealership away
from you. I said what differ-
ence does that make? I can get
the same damn gas and don’t
have to do what you guys are
telling me to do. After that I
didn’t take Standard Oil cards,
I took Bank of America cards.
It didn’t make any difference
to me.
Q: What have you been
doing since 1992?
I was a fireman and I clam
dug, commercial clam digger.
I’m married. I have three boys.
One boy lives in the area. He’s
a captain on the Tidewater
Barge Lines. The other two are
out of the area, one in Seattle
and the other’s in Grants Pass.
Q: What kind of activities
do you do with the Gearhart
Fire Department?
I have been there so long I
don’t really have a desire to go
in and breathe a lot of smoke. I
feel like I was in it. We do have
younger guys that are really
into it, and it’s really good they
are.
Q: Things were different
when you started?
You might say they were
different, but jumping on the
trucks and going to the fires
was the same. The difference
is the improvements between
now and then. We didn’t have
the modern Plectrons we have
now in our home. We had a
siren. The siren would go off.
We’d respond to the station.
I’d be the first one. Pick up the
phone and find out where the
fire was, mark it on the bulletin
board and then get up and go.
Q: Serious fires?
John Osburn, who owned
the Gearhart Hotel, was my
uncle. That was quite a build-
ing. I worked there in high
school. There were fires there.
The golf course across the
street caught on fire. That was
a big one.
One time, we were called
into a structure fire. There was
smoke coming out of the roof
and the windows were black.
All the firemen — including
myself — thought it was a
real serious fire. So we pulled
the ladder out and got out the
chainsaw and started to drill a
hole on the roof to vent and I
opened the door and there was
just smoke in the building that
wasn’t like hot smoke, just
smoke. There was no smoke
coming out of the chimney, but
there was a fire in the stove. I
said, I don’t think we need to
ventilate by cutting a hole in
the roof. It’s not hot in here.
Well, a squirrel had got up into
the chimney and built a nest
and plugged up all the ventila-
tion for the fire to go up out of
the chimney. Smoke was just
filling the room.
Q: Who were some of
the memorable people
you’ve worked with at the
department?
Memorable firemen —
there were a lot of them.
There’s a plaque in front of
the firehouse of all the people
who built the station. Denny
Holmes. Bill Heckenberg.
They’re still alive. They’re
older than me. Randy Curs
owned the grocery store. When
the siren rang, he and I would
race down there to see who got
there first. The story got out
that one time the fire siren rang
and I got halfway down to the
station and came back and got
my car and drove back to the
station — which was a block.
Q: Did you ever lose
anybody?
Yeah … yeah. We lost a
small child in the house right
next to the gas station. That’s
not something you want to
keep in the back of your mind.
Q: You responded to the
plane crash in 2008 that
killed five people?
Yes.
Q: Any moments you
couldn’t deal with?
I could deal with all of it.
The guy on the beach who
covered himself with gas,
and lit himself on fire, was
burning when we got there.
Some things we don’t want to
remember.
Q: Anything special you
want to talk about?
The Fireman’s Ball. I’ve
been to many fireman’s ball.
It’s always Memorial Day
weekend. It’s a fun deal. We
had it at the Gearhart Hotel
for about seven years, then at
a place called the Sands. Then
we went to the Fire Hall, and
had it in the hall itself by tak-
ing the trucks out, which we
still do. It used to be where the
people would really dress up. It
was a different clientele. There
weren’t that many younger
kids. Now the older people
would rather sit at home. Now
we have it at the station. We
rent a large tent.
Q: How do you feel about
the idea of building a new
firehouse?
It’s definitely got to be in
the making.
Q: Any preference where
it should be?
Not really. The location
where it is. Or across the street,

near the grade school where I
went to school. I wouldn’t want
to see the park up the hill used.
I think (former Gearhart resi-
dent) Lesley Miller donated it
as a park to stay a park.
Q: How long are you
going continue to volunteer?
That’s a good question. I
think that’s up to somebody
else. The guys are really good
guys. There’s always a few …
but it seems if they’re there
long enough, they get straight-
ened out. It’s more or less just
being able to provide a service
rather than how long I want to
be there. I’ll know.
