OREST GROVE — The phrase “March Mad-
ness” commonly refers to the college basket-
ball playoffs. It’s clearly an appropriate way to
describe high school basketball, too, as demon-
strated with a huge upset in the Oregon School Activ-
ities Association/U.S. Bank/Les Schwab Tires Class
4A girls basketball state tournament at Forest Grove
High School.
Perhaps “Giant Killers” would be a suitable nick-
name for the Seaside High Seagulls following their
surprising 47-42 quarterfi nal win Thursday over the
No. 1 ranked and undefeated Cascade Cougars (20-1).
For No. 9 ranked Seaside (19-4) the win propels them
into the semifi nals for the fi rst time since 2014.
Seaside, led by coach Mike Hawes, meet the
defending state champion Sutherlin Bulldogs (21-5)
in a 1:30 p.m. contest Thursday at Forest Grove High.
Sutherlin won 42-35 over Mazama (17-7) in Thurs-
day’s quarterfi nals to reach the semi s. If Seaside wins
Friday, it will advance to Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. 4A state
championship game for the fi rst time ever.
“I’m extremely proud of all of our kids,” said
Hawes. “We knew that if we took care of the ball, then
we would have a pretty good chance to win and that’s
what we did.”

IN BRIEF
Astoria’s Poyer
signs with Bills
Associated Press
The Buffalo Bills began
addressing their needs at safety by
signing free agents Micah Hyde
and Jordan Poyer.
Former Astoria High School
standout athlete Poyer has four
years of NFL experience, and
spent the past three-plus sea-
sons in Cleveland. The free safety
started the fi rst six games last sea-
son before suffering a lacerated
kidney against the Titans.
Hyde is the key addition and
agreed to sign a fi ve-year deal
worth about $30 million, with
about $14 million in guarantees,
a person with direct knowledge
of the contract told The Associ-
ated Press. The person spoke to
The AP on the condition of ano-
nymity because the Bills have not
announced the contract’s details.
