Scandinavian Festival Court is presented Tuesday
The Daily Astorian
The formal presentation of the Astoria Scandinavian Midsum-
mer Festival Court takes place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Astoria
High School Commons Area. This year marks the 50th anniver-
sary of the festival.
Miss Scandinavia 2016 Megan McCall
DeVos will crown the new Miss Scandinavia
at this summer’s festival. She is the daughter
of Jonathon and Michelle DeVos. Her grand-
parents are Kellie Selven, Mike McCall,
Tony and Thea DeVos. Her great-grandpar-
ents are Jackie and Robert Letsinger and
Edward and Janice McCall. A 2016 graduate
of Astoria High School, she is now attending
Western Oregon University. She joins the
2017 Scandinavian Court until she passes
the crown.

sen, a junior at Knappa High School. She

is the daughter of Stacey Hansen and Mike
DeVos
Funk. Her grandparents are Frances and
Richard Hansen and Brendasue and George McCabe. A member
of the Danish Lodge, she works at Dutch Brothers and Clatsop
Retirement Village. Her school activities include forestry, track,
archery and drama, and she is the Associated Student Body arts
and drama representative.
Senior Miss Finland is Megan Schacher, a junior at Asto-
ria High School. Her parents are Michael and Melissa Schacher.
Her grandparents are Chris and Thelma Rose, Michael and Sherry
Schacher and Anita Schacher. She is an honors student, a mem-
ber of the Art Club and Mu Alpha Theta, on the soccer and swim
teams, and plays the flute in the wind symphony and pep band. She

works for her father in construction and also at the Astoria Aquatic
Center lifeguarding.
Senior Miss Norway is Maya McGill, a sophomore at Seaside
High School. Her parents are Jana and David McGill. Her grand-
parents are Ray and Solfrid Price. She is involved in the swim team
and robotics at school, and works as a swim instructor at the Sun-
set Empire Park and Recreation District in Seaside. She was Junior
Miss Norway in 2010.
Senior Miss Sweden is Kara Dowaliby, who attends Warren-
ton High School. Her parents are Todd and Dixie Dowaliby. Her
grandparents are Bill and Betty Cunningham and Mike and Sally
Dowaliby. She has attended the festival since she was born, has
been a volunteer and a Viking Nordic Dancer for nine years, and
was Junior Miss Sweden in 2007. She is in the National Honor
Society, on the varsity golf team, and is a member of the Dance
Team Club and Student Council. She is also involved with Com-
micare, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), the
school choir and Honor Choir and the Oregon Ambassadors of
Music.
Junior Miss Denmark is Norah Alsbury. She is the daugh-
ter of Brian and Sarah Alsbury. Her grandparents are Lynette Lit-
win and Lynn and Rose Alsbury. Her mother was also Junior and
Senior Miss Denmark.
Junior Miss Finland is Georgia Sutton. She is the daughter
of Josh Sutton and Laura Schlip. Her grandparents are Shellie and
Marc O’Connor, Charlotte and Willie Nyberg and Timothy Schlip.
Junior Miss Iceland is Jenna Karnofski. She is the daugh-
ter of Carol and Marc Simmons and Jarrod and Vinessa Karnof-
ski. Her grandparents are Ed and Lawanna Chase and Jim and Vera
Karnofski. Jenna’s mother was Junior Miss Iceland in 1986.
Junior Miss Norway is Augusta Hayrynen. She is the daugh-
ter of Kurt and Trisha Hayrynen. Her grandparents are Jon and
Phyllis Hayrynen and Don and Carla Hall and David Hill.
Junior Miss Sweden is Maggie Falleur. She is the daughter
of Tom and Emily Falleur. Her grandparents are Don and Bonnie
Fisher and the late Don and Helen Falleur.
Senior Court Chaperone is Sharon Hale of Astoria. She is
married to Dennis Hale. Retired from teaching at Astoria High
School, she has been involved with the Astoria Scandinavian Fes-
tival for many years.
Junior Court Chaperone is Emily Falleur. She is employed
at Del’s OK Tire part time and farms the rest of the day with her
husband, Tom. Her daughter, Maggie, is Junior Miss Sweden. She
was Junior Miss Denmark in 1983 and Senior Miss Denmark is
1992. She is also a former member of the Viking Nordic Dancers.
Crown Bearer is Wyatt Jackson. He is the son of Susan and
Dan Jackson. His grandparents are Bev and Dave Hoofnagle and
Bev Jackson-Shumaker. His great-grandmother is Betty Russell.
He is in his second year with the Nordic Dance Group.
The Astoria Scandinavian Midsummer Festival takes place
