Gulls finally get a win at the Brick House

The Seaside boys basketball team
can generally win on any court, any
day of the week, day or night.
But the undefeated, No. 1-ranked
Gulls actually faced a challenge last
night at Astoria — winning on a court
where they hadn’t won since 2014.
Seaside took care of that little matter
with a 73-53 victory over the Fishermen
Wednesday at the Brick House, where
the Gulls did just enough to stay one step
ahead of Astoria, from start to finish.
The Gulls were 0-for-2 on their last
two trips to Astoria, as the Fishermen
won last year’s game 63-57, and took
down the Gulls 42-33 the year before
that.
“This was a BIG win for us,” said
Seaside coach Bill Westerholm, with
an emphasis on “big.”
“They know,” Westerholm said of
his players, and their 0-for-2 record at
Astoria. “This is a tough place to play.
There’s so much history here, and
when Seaside comes in, the kids get a
little bit more excited.”
In the end, two players had 20-plus
points for the Gulls, as Seaside contin-
ues its march to Hillsboro, where the
Gulls will be playing just over a month
from now.
Payton Westerholm had two
3-pointers in the opening minute,
sparking a 20-point night for the soph-
omore. Seaside’s other Super Soph,
Chase Januik, led with 23 points.
“Astoria’s game plan was to stop
our three shooters,” coach Wester-
holm said. “Chase still ended up with
23, and they didn’t guard Payton, and
he made them pay in that first part of
the game.”
Astoria coach Kevin Goin com-
mented, “We wanted Payton and
(Attikin) Babb to beat us, and Payton
hit some shots early on,” he said.
“I thought we played well, but our
issue — as it has been all year — we
just don’t score well enough at times,
because we don’t take our time or capi-
talize on our opportunities. We want to
score early on a break, or late on a pos-
session. And we struggled at times.”
The Fishermen did manage to keep
pace, for a while.
Jackson Arnsdorf opened with a
3-pointer, and Ole Englund’s three-
point play had the teams tied at 10-10.
But two more long range bombs
from Westerholm to start the second
period, and another trey from Januik
gave the Gulls a 35-23 halftime lead.
Both teams spent time at the free
throw line in the second half. Astoria
finished 10-of-18 for the night, to Sea-
side’s 19-for-26.
Babb scored 11 points, while Jack-
son Januik had just one field goal (a
3-pointer in the first quarter) and six
free throws for nine points.
Englund led Astoria with 16, fol-
lowed by Karsten Johnson and Ryan
Palek with 11 apiece. Johnson had a
pair of 3-pointers early in the fourth, as

the Fishermen pulled to within 64-52
midway through the period.
The Gulls still had four of their five
starters on the floor with 1:10 left in
the game — which is usually not the
case for Seaside, now 17-0, 7-0 in
league. Astoria falls to 1-6.
“Our kids played hard and did
some really good things,” Goin said.
“We just can’t score with (the Gulls),
and that’s just the reality. We had some
mental errors, gave up too many offen-
sive rebounds, didn’t do some of the
little things, and that’s the difference
right there, between winning games
and not winning games.”
Still, “We’ve got Tillamook and
Scappoose left, and if we win those
two, we’ll be fourth, and that’s a home
playoff game. If we split, we’re proba-
bly fifth, unless something goofy hap-
pens. We want to hope for no ties (in
the standings).”

Ranked fourth in the latest
coaches poll and fifth in the OSAA
rankings, the Seaside Lady Gulls
continue to rack up the wins.
Seaside jumped out to an 18-0
lead, Maddi Utti had her second
30-point night in eight days, and
the Gulls defeated Astoria 63-35
Wednesday in a Cowapa League
girls basketball game at the Brick
House.
Utti was Seaside’s all-everything
in the win, as the senior is making
a strong case for 4A state Player of
the Year.
She finished with 31 points, 11
steals, 10 rebounds and six assists.
The Gulls “had some barren
stretches,” said coach Mike Hawes,
“but enough good stretches to kind
of keep and hold the lead.”
Utti “filled the stat sheet with a
triple double,” he said. “But again I
loved Emy Kiser’s lift off the bench
(eight points) and Anesha Smart’s
finding ways to contribute.”
Sydney Villegas had nine points
for the Gulls, who play at Valley
Catholic Friday.
After falling behind 18-0, Astoria
reeled off seven straight points, and
stayed within striking distance.
Alexis Wallace had two 3-point-
ers and Sam Hemsley added a third,
as the Lady Fish narrowed the mar-
gin to 34-22 in the third quarter.
“I felt like we got a little compla-
cent after we jumped out to the 18-0
lead and Astoria kept making some
runs, but we kept the pressure up
and that allowed us some run-outs
and baskets,” Hawes said.
Free throws helped, as Seaside
finished 18-of-32 at the line, to Asto-
ria’s 8-of-16. Utti was 12-for-16.
Wallace led Astoria with 12 points.
