Logger boys
down Dragons
The Daily Astorian
KNAPPA — Two days after a
big win over Vernonia, and two
days before a big game vs. Colum-
bia Christian, the Knappa Loggers
came out a little flat against Del-
phian Saturday, in a Northwest
League boys basketball game.
Fortunately, the Loggers were
playing the winless Dragons, and
Knappa still won easily, 50-31.
“It was a Saturday afternoon
game, and maybe we were looking
ahead a little,” said Knappa coach
Chris Spencer. “We will definitely
have to play better Monday.”
Knappa had 22 turnovers, and
led only 19-6 after one quarter.
Colton Weirup scored 11 of his
game-high 13 points in the first
period, and the Loggers led 27-8
at halftime.
Dale Takalo had 10 points, and
Jason Miller finished with five
steals, six points, seven rebounds
and eight assists.
Knappa (11-0) hosts a makeup
game today vs. Columbia Chris-
tian (9-1).

Ilwaco wins Beach Brawl
The Daily Astorian
I
LWACO, Wash. — The Ilwaco wrestling
team was the host team Saturday, for the
annual “Beach Brawl Invitational.”
The event brought in 21 schools and more
than 300 wrestlers, “and we pulled it off in
great style,” Ilwaco coach Kevin McNulty
announced. “No down time … mats were
moving all day long. We began wrestling at
10:20 a.m. and our last match was completed
at 6:33 p.m.”
And, of course, the home squad won the
team title, as Ilwaco racked up 209.5 points to
take first in the field of 21 teams.
Kelso was a close second at 203.5, fol-
lowed by Adna, a distant third with 125.
Other local teams competing included
Knappa (tied with Neah-Kah-Nie for seventh,
63 points); Seaside (12th, 57 points); Asto-
ria (17th, 29 points); and Warrenton (18th, 28
points).
For Knappa, Andrew Goozee took first
place at 195 pounds, going 3-0 to run his win
streak to 23 straight. Logger Luke Goozee
tied for third at 126 with a 2-1 record. Earlier
in the week, Seaside hosted a three-way Cow-
apa League dual with Astoria and Banks.
The Braves defeated the Gulls 76-3, while
Astoria topped Seaside in the Clatsop Clash
portion of the dual meet, 40-24.
Ten of the 14 matches between the Fisher-
men and Gulls ended in forfeits, with Astoria
winning three of the four matches on the mat.
Astoria’s Trey Hageman scored a major
decision (18-7) over Seaside’s Zachary
Kuzakin at 152 pounds; Fisherman Kaden
Gilbert had a 20-second fall over Jake Black
at 182; and Jeff Stutznegger pinned Seaside’s
Will Kautz in 3:18 at 220.
Shane Smith had the lone victory on the
mat for the Gulls, pinning Astoria’s Riley
Ashton in 1:10.
Seaside’s Andrew Gastelum posted a 9-2
decision over Joshua Hanlon of Banks.
Lady Gulls shoot past Tillamook
The Daily Astorian
TILLAMOOK — Seaside missed
46 shots from the field and 15 free
throws — but the Gulls still man-
aged a 15-point win Friday night at
Tillamook.
The winless Cheesemaker girls
basketball team put a scare into the
Gulls, but Seaside remained unbeaten
in Cowapa League play (4-0) with a
62-47 win.
Tillamook’s Jennifer Tuatagaloa
scored on an offensive rebound to
start the fourth quarter, and the Chee-
semakers held a brief 40-39 lead.
But Seaside’s Maddi Utti had a
steal and score seconds later put the
Gulls up for good.
Seaside was 25-for-71 from the
field, 10-for-25 at the free throw line.
Utti — who was in early foul trou-
ble — added a three-point play later
in the fourth to help Seaside pull
away.
Utti only had two points in the
first half, but finished with 18 points,
to go with six steals and six assists.
Bryre Babbitt and Sydney Villegas
added 13 points apiece, and Anesha
Smart tossed in 10 points with five
rebounds.
“This was not an easy game,”
said Seaside coach Mike Hawes.
“Tillamook came to play, they were
methodical in breaking our pressure,
shot the ball pretty well and hurt us
on the glass.”
He added, “Tillamook took the
lead somewhere there late in the
third quarter and then we responded,
showed some poise and had a solid
fourth quarter to put the game away.
But it was not easy. Bryre was huge
— she made shots from a lot of dif-
ferent places. She’s really becoming
a solid third scorer behind Maddi and
Sydney.”
Gull boys cruise to win at Tillamook
The Daily Astorian
TILLAMOOK — Tillamook
stayed with Seaside longer than most
teams, but not nearly long enough Fri-
day night, in a Cowapa League boys
basketball game at Tillamook.
The Cheesemakers were within
nine points to start the fourth quarter,
when the Gulls kicked in to overdrive
and pulled away for an easy 74-53 win.
A Tillamook basket to end the third
period had the Cheesemakers within
51-42, but Seaside’s Jackson Januik
opened the fourth with two 3-pointers,
added another two off a steal, and Pay-
ton Westerholm’s jump shot pushed
the lead to 61-42.
Chase Januik led a foursome of
players in double figures with 19,
Westerholm had 17, while Jackson
Januik and Hunter Thompson scored
10 apiece. The No. 1-ranked Gulls
improve to 14-0 overall, 4-0 in league.
Lady Warriors score huge weekend wins
The Daily Astorian
WARRENTON — The Warrenton
Warriors will look to finish off a per-
fect four-game homestand this week,
as they posted two wins in two days
over the weekend.
Warrenton (6-5 in league play)
opened Friday with a 56-42 victory
over a tough team from Catlin Gabel
(1-11), followed by a Saturday night
win over Riverdale (3-7), 45-24.
The Warriors overcame an early
7-2 deficit against the Mavericks, out-
scoring Riverdale 16-0 in the second
quarter.
Warrenton won it with defense, fin-
ishing with 15 steals and nine blocks.
Tyla Little led the offense with nine
points, followed by Landree Miethe
with eight, as the Warriors outscored
Riverdale 38-14 over the final three
quarters.
Warrenton played its “most com-
plete defensive game of the year,”
according to coach Robert Hoepfl, in
the win over Catlin Gabel. The Eagles
played the Warriors tough, Hoepfl said.
“They’ve been playing well lately
against a lot of teams,” he said. “But
we played a great team game — 11
blocks, 12 steals, and Landree Miethe
had her best game of the season.”
Miethe scored a game-high 22
points, with most of her points com-
ing on fast breaks off steals.
Warrenton boys score first win league play
The Daily Astorian
WARRENTON — The Warrenton
boys basketball team picked up their
first league win of the season Satur-
day night, a 57-53 double overtime
victory over Riverdale.
Playing without a key starter and
trailing 19-9 after one quarter, the
Warriors had to stage a big rally just
to get the game to overtime, then out-
scored the Mavericks 9-5 in the sec-
ond overtime period, with most of the
Warrenton points coming at the free
throw line in the overtime session.
Before that, it was Dalton Knight,
who had a school-record 10 3-point-
ers on his way to a 34-point night to
lead the Warriors.
Riverdale was 18-of-60 from the
field, while Warrenton made 14-of-31
shots from the 3-point line alone.
The Warriors lost a 54-30 decision
to Catlin Gabel the night before, and
were playing without starter Tyler
Whitaker.
“We’re pretty worn out and the
kids are pretty exhausted,” said War-
renton coach Nate McBride. “But
they just hung in there.”
The Mavericks led 28-17 after
the first quarter, before the Warrior
rally began with Warrenton outscor-
ing Riverdale 15-10 in the third quar-
ter and 10-4 in the fourth, to force
overtime.
Braves battle
past Astoria
The Daily Astorian
BANKS — Astoria was within
three points with just three min-
utes left, but Banks scored a few
late baskets, made some free
throws, and posted an eventual
65-51 win over the Fishermen in
Cowapa League boys basketball
action Friday.
Some crucial calls did not go
Astoria’s way, as the Fishermen
came up short in their upset bid
against the No. 7-ranked Braves.
“We battled and the kids
played well,” said Astoria coach
Kevin Goin. “I was happy with
the effort. We just got into some
foul trouble, and that hurt.
“They’re not as physical as
Valley Catholic, but (the Braves)
are big, and they hurt us on the
boards.”
Ole Englund, Jasyn Gohl and
Ryan Palek all found themselves
in foul trouble, “and we don’t
have a ton of depth right now,”
Goin said, with Fridtjof Fremstad
and Kyle Strange still sidelined
with injuries.
Englund led the Fisher-
men with 15 points, followed
by Karsten Johnson with 12, as
Astoria trailed 40-32 entering
the fourth quarter, and rallied to
within three points of the Braves.
Dalton Renne scored 23 points
and teammate Blake Gobel added
20 for Banks, which improves to
4-0 in league and plays at Seaside
Tuesday.
No. 1 Banks tops
Astoria girls
The Daily Astorian
BANKS — The No. 1-ranked
Banks Braves held off Astoria,
52-34, in a Cowapa League girls
basketball game Friday.
Freshman Julie Norris scored
nine points and Alexis Wallace
added eight for the Lady Fisher-
men, followed by freshman Kajsa
Jackson with five.
Norris also tied with a
team-leading four rebounds and
three steals for Astoria (5-12 over-
all), which hosts Scappoose (2-12)
Tuesday.
