A fifth-generation Oregon native, McOmie is an Emmy award winning journalist, author and teacher who realized he hadn’t seen enough of his native state, and he has spent much of his 30-year career as a news reporter explor- College hosts free course on emergency shelters The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Clatsop Community College will host a free course to help prepare people for running an emer- gency shelter after a disaster. “Comprehensive Shel- ter Training,” a five-ses- sion course taught by Red Cross-certified instructors, trains and certifies partici- pants in basic food safety, psychological first aid, serv- ing people with functional and access needs and reconnect- ing people through the Red Cross’ Safe & Well online system. Allison Coffinberger will share her experience run- ning warming centers, and will discuss the differences between shelters and warm- ing centers. The core section, “Shel- ter Fundamentals,” includes procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster. A case study and a final simulation com- plete the course. The entire course is free. Classes meet at the college’s South County Campus at 1455 N. Roosevelt Drive in Seaside, adjacent to Diamond Heating. The first two classes will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 27 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 28.
