Warriors
fall short
in Portland
The Daily Astorian
PORTLAND — An 8-0 run
by Portland Christian midway
through the third quarter helped
the Royals pull away for a 67-52
win over Warrenton, as the Lady
Warriors braved the snow and
made the trip to Portland Tues-
day night for a key Lewis & Clark
League girls basketball game.
First half 3-pointers by Tyla
Little had the Warriors within
17-14, and scores from Krista
Morrill, Fernanda Alvarez and
Katelynn Blodgett had Warren-
ton trailing 27-26 late in the sec-
ond quarter.
The Warriors finally pulled
even in the third period, 39-39,
but that’s when Portland Chris-
tian went on an 8-0 run to build a
47-39 lead, and a 3-pointer at the
buzzer to end the quarter made it
50-41.
The Royals made their free
throws, and more 3-pointers in the
fourth period led to an eventual
16-point lead.

Royals edge
Warrenton
boys, 47-44
The Daily Astorian
PORTLAND — Portland
Christian won a back-and-forth
battle with Warrenton in the fourth
quarter Tuesday, in a Lewis &
Clark League boys basketball
game in Portland — a five-hour
return road trip for the Warriors.
The Warriors and Royals
exchanged leads several times,
before Portland Christian made
a few late free throws to score a
47-44 win.
An offensive rebound score by
Warrenton’s Tyler Whitaker had
given the Warriors a 41-40 lead
early in the fourth, but the Royals
answered with a 3-pointer and did
not trail again. The Warriors had
several chances late, following a
score by Devin Jackson that cut
the deficit to 46-44, but Warren-
ton missed a 3-pointer that would
have given the Warriors the lead
with three seconds left.

Loggers cruise in 48-point win

K
NAPPA — Like most
Knappa wins, it was over by
halftime.
The Loggers led 41-9 at the
break Tuesday night at home, on
their way to a 72-24 win over City
Christian in a Northwest League
boys basketball game.
“It was just a good, all-around
team win,” said Knappa coach
Chris Spencer, whose team is
fifth in the latest OSAA RPI rank-
ings. “We played great defense (12
steals), and we had 21 team assists,
so we did a great job of working the
ball around.”
Junior Dale Takalo led the scor-
ing with 24 points, to go with six
rebounds and three assists. Jason
Miller added eight boards, six
assists and four steals, and fresh-
man Eli Takalo chipped in with
15 points, five assists and four
rebounds.

with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Knappa will host No. 9-ranked
Columbia Christian Thursday.
“They’re quick, talented …
they’re going to be tough to beat,”
Spencer said. “They create a lot of
tough matchups for us.”

Blazers continue streak over Lakers
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — If there’s a
mystery to it, the Los Angeles Lakers
can’t solve it. They can only seem to
repeat the same story over and over.
Play the Portland Trail Blazers,
lose to the Portland Trail Blazers.
It happened yet again, with the
Blazers using a dominant third quar-
ter to defeat the Lakers for the 10th
consecutive time, 108-87 on Tuesday.
The Blazers trailed by two to start
the second half, but held the Lakers
to 21.7 percent shooting (5 of 23) and
blocked four shots in the third quarter,
outscoring Los Angeles 23-12.
“I’m still trying to figure out
exactly what happened in the sec-
ond half,” Lakers coach Luke Walton
said. “I was shocked.”
C.J. McCollum led the Blaz-
ers with 25 points, but Damian Lil-
lard sparked the third-quarter rally.
After starting the game 0 for 8 from
the field, Lillard scored 11 points in
the third, perhaps inspired by a dou-
ble technical on him and Lakers
guard D’Angelo Russell when they
exchanged brief but heated words.
“Don’t poke the bear,” said Port-
land forward Maurice Harkless, who

had 14 points. “Let him sleep.”
After scoring 31 points in the sec-
ond quarter, the Lakers managed only
30 more in the second half.
Luol Deng led the Lakers with 14
points, but did not make a field goal
after the first half.
The Blazers shot 50.6 percent.
Harkless hit all but one of his six field
goal attempts and blocked three shots.
Al-Farouq Aminu had 15 rebounds,
and Evan Turner added seven assists.

made it safely from Salt Lake City.

Astoria Fishermen to their second
win in two days at the Brick House,

SPORTS
IN BRIEF
R.A. Long the previous night.
“We moved the ball well again,
we got good looks, and we did a
good job getting to the hole,” said
Astoria coach Kevin Goin. “We
made our free throws (18-of-23),
where normally we don’t shoot that
many.”
Estacada held a 15-12 lead after
one quarter, but Astoria rallied for
a 30-28 lead at halftime, then out-
scored the Rangers 17-5 in the third
quarter.
Six-foot-5 senior Hayden Brooks
had five 3-pointers on his way to 17
points for the Rangers, who were
8-for-21 from the 3-point line.
The Fishermen are scheduled
to finish nonleague play Friday at
Stayton.
KNAPPA — City Chris-
tian jumped out to a quick 12-4
lead, and managed to maintain
the advantage over the final three
quarters Tuesday, for a 39-32 win
at Knappa in Northwest League
girls basketball action.
The Lions outscored the Log-
gers 28-27 over the final three
quarters, as Knappa could not
overcome 34 turnovers and some
big 3-point shots and numer-
ous offensive rebounds by City
Christian.
Kristina Dickinson scored
18 points for the Lions, while
Aiko Miller and Devin Vander-
griff had eight points apiece to
lead Knappa. Paris Vanderburg
had eight rebounds, and Kait-
lyn Landwehr finished with six
rebounds and four steals.
