Ranta defeated Martinez. The action was done by noon Saturday. Weather forces early end to Pac Rim tournament By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian EASIDE — The annual 2017 Pacific Rim Armed Forces Wrestling tour- nament … was also the quickest annual Pacific Rim Armed Forces Wrestling tournament. In order for visiting schools to beat Satur- day’s bad weather on their way home, wres- tlers wrestled late into the night Friday to complete action through the semifinals, and Saturday’s action began at 8 a.m. And the tournament was done by noon Sat- urday, with 15 schools wrapping up the action on another Pac Rim. Nine-time team champion Estacada was a no-show, leaving Tigard (a 6A Oregon school) and Ilwaco (1B Washington) to battle it out for the team title. And the Tigers of Tigard had three individ- ual champions and lots of top five placers to win the team title, with 213.5 points. Ilwaco had five wrestlers in the finals, with three champions to finish second with 192.5 points, followed by Scappoose (186.5) and St. Hel- ens (117). Astoria placed 10th, with Seaside 12th, Knappa 13th and Warrenton 15th to round out the local schools. Chase Conner of Corbett — the individual champion at 126 — was the Most Valuable Wrestler for the lower weights, and Tigard’s Parker Kuntz (160) won the award for the upper weights. Knappa’s Andrew Goozee added another tournament first-place medal to his collection, as the Logger senior was 3-0 at 195 pounds. S Knappa’s Andrew Goozee defeates Nestucca’s Chase Cook in a 195-pound final during the Pacific Rim tourney. FINAL TEAM RESULTS Tigard 213.5, Ilwaco 192.5, Scappoose 186.5, St. Helens 117, Yamhill-Carlton 113, Stayton 111.5, Columbia 101, Nestucca 90, Vernonia 85, Astoria 83, Clatskanie 68, Seaside 61, Knappa 60, Corbett 57, Warrenton 28. After a 6-0 decision over Ilwaco’s Marcus Connor in the quarterfinals, Goozee pinned Skyler Bhagat of Scappoose in 23 seconds, then took down Nestucca’s Chase Cook in the title bout, pinning Cook in 1:52. Logger teammate and brother Luke Goo- zee lost in the semifinals at 126, and eventu- ally finished fifth with a pin (1:31) over Sea- side’s Shane Smith in his last match. Astoria junior Juan Jimenez lost in the semifinals at 106, but bounced back with two wins in consolation to take third, capped by a pin (2:40) over A.J. DeGrande of Scappoose. The consolation final at 145 pounds came down to a match between Astoria’s Tyler Ranta and Warrenton’s Giovanni Martinez. Ranta gained a quick advantage and pinned Martinez in 1:04 to take third. Martinez “fought hard, won three tough matches and took home fourth,” said War- renton coach Corey Conant. “Gio has really started to turn the corner in his development and win the close ones.” The tournament also included a girls’ divi- sion, and “our girls team was able to get some mat time and went 4-2 as a unit,” Conant said of the Lady Warriors. “Noel O’Bryan, Jade Freniere, Bella Carr and Asia Lambert all earned gutsy wins. Alma Bolanos and Ivy McCargish each gave up considerable weight to their opponents and lost their matches, but mat time itself is invaluable at this point in the year.” Astoria junior Trey Hageman took fourth at 152, and Fisherman Kaden Gilbert was fourth at 182. The hosts from Seaside had their own highlights. Freshman Andrew Gastelum lost in the quarterfinals at 113, but he recovered and won four straight in the consolation bracket. Gastelum finished with an 8-4 decision over Tigard’s Jose Carrasco in the third-place match. Adding points for the Gulls was freshman Luke Nelson, who also lost in the quarterfi- nals, but responded with two wins in consola- tion before a loss to Tigard’s Javier Velasquez in the third-place match. Ilwaco’s list of individual champi- ons included Jack Odneal at 145; Brandon McMullen at 182; and Alec Bell at 220. Ghannon Whelden took second at 113, and Marcello Lazaro was second at 285. Lady Gulls defeat Newport The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Seaside jumped out to its usual big lead Friday night, and scored just enough points in the fourth quarter to hold off Newport for a 37-31 win, in a nonleague girls basketball game played at Broadway Middle School. The Lady Gulls made three free throws in the final period … and that was it, as Newport did not score a single point over the final four minutes. Maddi Utti scored 16 points and had eight rebounds with seven steals, as the No. 11-ranked Gulls improved to 7-2 overall. Utti capped an early 9-0 run for the Gulls, that gave Seaside a com- fortable 19-6 lead early in the sec- ond quarter. The Cubs fought their way back into the game behind 3-pointers from Tehya Woodruff, Halle Hargett and Madison Hargett in the second half, with the final trey coming at the 4:00 mark of the fourth quarter, bringing Newport to within 34-31. But, Utti made 1-of-2 free throws and Jetta Ideue hit 2-for-4 over the final 2:43 to clinch the win for Seaside. “It was a tough, often ugly slog in the old Broadway gym,” said Sea- side coach Mike Hawes. “The turn- overs were reminiscent of middle school games — 27, and a cool 29 percent field goal percentage ensured a close, choppy game throughout. ‘It was a tough, often ugly slog in the old Broadway gym.’ Mike Hawes, Seaside coach “We just could not get any rhythm, either in hanging onto the ball or making a shot,” he added. “But give Newport credit. They’ve improved immensely from the Hol- iday Tournament and they came to play, and they play hard, get to the right spots and competed. It’s a win and we’ll take it.” Sydney Villegas had eight points and eight rebounds for Seaside, and the Gulls finished with 18 steals. Takalo brothers, Loggers pound Falcons The Daily Astorian KNAPPA — The Knappa Log- gers got off to a slow start and did not play their best game … but still won by 45 points Friday night. The Takalo brothers outscored Faith Bible by themselves in the Northwest League game, won by Knappa, 75-30. Dale Takalo had 24 points, nine rebounds and three steals, Eli Takalo scored 11 points, and Colton Weirup added 10 points and five steals for the Loggers. Knappa led 15-9 after one quar- ter, then outscored the out-matched Falcons 42-10 over the second and third quarters. The Loggers were 8-for-27 from the 3-point line and had 22 steals. Falcons edge Lady Loggers The Daily Astorian KNAPPA — Faith Bible jumped over Knappa in the league standings Friday night, as the Falcons posted a 44-25 win over the Lady Loggers on Knappa’s home floor, in a key Northwest League girls basketball showdown. Knappa trailed 17-3 after one quarter, and 36-9 after three quarters, before outscoring Faith Bible 16-8 in the fourth. “We knew they were good com- ing in, and we just couldn’t stop their bigs (sisters Katie and Sarah Fajer, and6-foot senior Jessica Irving),” said Knappa coach Marie Green. “They were just throwing it over the top to the sisters.” Katie Fajer had 20 points, and Sarah Fajer added 13 for the Falcons. Irving scored eight. Devin Vandergriff had nine points and three assists for the Loggers, while Paris Vanderburg added seven points and six rebounds. Madelynn Weaver had five steals and four boards.
