Debbie Reynolds and daughter Weintraub: ‘It’s nice to be able
Carrie Fisher linked by death to develop a program on your own’
By ANDREW DALTON
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — Debbie
Reynolds embodied the sun-
shine of postwar America on
the screen as she matched steps
with Gene Kelly in “Singin’ in
the Rain.”
Carrie Fisher brought the
sarcasm and cynicism of the
Baby Boomers to her movies,
books and stage shows, even
when she was playing a prin-
cess in “Star Wars.”
The mother and daughter,
separated by so many differ-
ences both personal and gener-
ational, are likely drawn closer
in the public memory after their
deaths on successive days.
Reynolds died on Wednes-
day at age 84, just as she and
the rest of the world were start-
ing to mourn her daughter
Fisher, who died on Tuesday
at 60, days after falling ill on
a flight.
Even after a year of shock-
ing and constant celebrity
deaths, the one-two punch of
Fisher and Reynolds brought a
staggering finale to 2016.
Reynolds’ son Todd Fisher
said his sister’s death was “just
too much” for his mother.
“She said, ‘I want to be with
Carrie,”’ Fisher told The Asso-
ciated Press by phone from
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,
where Reynolds had just died
after being rushed there earlier
in the day. “And then she was
gone.”
No cause of death has been
revealed for either woman.

Roberts: New co-coordinator
says she has ‘giant shoes to fill’
Continued from Page 1A
Another volunteer, Kathy
Sasso, of Astoria, said Rob-
erts’ Wishing Tree legacy will
be her success at galvanizing
community support, an effort
that could sustain the program
for a long time.
Robyn Koustik, of Asto-
ria, and Denise Cleveland, of
Warrenton, are stepping up as
co-coordinators. Roberts may
be a small person, Koustik
said, but “I’ve got giant shoes
to fill.”
Gift giving
Roberts took over the
program when the Wishing
Tree covered all of Clatsop
County. Since then, some cit-
ies have developed their own
programs.
When parents apply, their
children’s Christmas wish list
is written on a bell-shaped
paper ornament, which is
hung on a “wishing tree” dis-
played in a bank, store or other
business. Community mem-
bers take the bells, buy the
gifts and place them under a
wishing tree.
The volunteers then gather
the gifts, which are trans-
ported to the Clatsop County
Fairgrounds. Families show
up to collect them, along with
any food baskets ordered. If a
family can’t pick up the gifts,
local military personnel and
Rotary Club members deliver
them.
Oftentimes a sponsor will
“adopt” a family and buy all
of their toys and food for the
holidays.
Many children ask for stan-
dard fare like Legos, Barbies,
crayons, X-Boxes or a bike.
Others wish for things less
widely available.
One young man asked for
some sports memorabilia, and
his donor gave him hundreds
of baseball and football cards
from his personal collection.
When a girl asked for special
effects makeup, Roberts and
the Wishing Tree team spe-
cially ordered it for her.
“Barb gives special atten-
tion to all of these kids and the
gift requests that they have,”
Fick said. “We can’t give
everybody everything they
want, but a lot of things that
are doable, she makes sure
that they happen every year.”
Koustik is director of the
Astoria Armory community
center and has helped arrange
storage for the Wishing Tree.
She knows, and regularly sees,
many of the kids whose fami-
lies benefit from the program.
When Roberts said she was
going to step down as coordi-
nator and worried that the pro-
gram may not continue, Kous-
tik said she “just couldn’t
in good conscience let it go
away.”
Deserving of
Christmas
Sasso’s 15-year-old daugh-
ter, Nikkole, won Miss North
Coast Outstanding Teen this
year and has been volunteering
for the Wishing Tree since she
was 3. Her platform, inspired
by her work with Roberts,
was “Every child deserves a
Christmas.”
Roberts and her husband,
Steve, work virtually year-
round on the Wishing Tree:
storing up clothes and supple-
mental toys; reminding spon-
sors to donate; and other-
wise pulling all of the pieces
together.
Year after year, the Wish-
ing Tree has been a lifestyle
for them. When they would
visit Barb’s parents’ house for
Christmas dinner, they would
always deliver at least three
packages of gifts to families
en route. “That’s just the way
it was,” Steve said.
Kathy Sasso told Barb, “I
see you treat every one of those
children like they’re your own.
You have that kind of caring
for every one of them.”
In Roberts’ living room
stood a Christmas tree dec-
orated with thank-you notes
written by people who picked
up their Wishing Tree gifts.
When Barb Roberts said
she and her husband didn’t
have kids, Sasso corrected her:
“You have 850 this year.”

‘A lot of fun’
After working on federal or
statewide land access issues,
Weintraub said working in a
small community is “a lot of
fun.”
“It’s nice to be able to
develop a program on your
own and see it to fruition,”
Weintraub said. “There’s a
high degree of fulfillment and
personal satisfaction in that.
It’s on a very real scale.”
At the chamber, Wein-
traub’s tasks range from post-
ing on Instagram to planning
marketing efforts for the year
and coordinating arts festi-
vals or business after-hours
events. A major part of his
job is marketing Cannon
Beach to group events like
conferences.
Since Cannon Beach is
at maximum capacity during
summer months, Weintraub
said the chamber does not
advertise in the summer and
instead encourages visitors
during the off-season.
“We look for other oppor-
tunities,” he said. “We’re try-
ing to find a way to temporally
diversify financial benefits
of tourism during the entire
year.”
In his spare time, Wein-
traub takes advantage of the
North Coast’s recreational
opportunities by fishing, run-
ning and biking.
Although he rides his bike
throughout town, he hopes
the city will foster more rec-
reational opportunities and
promote different modes of
transportation.
Enhancing bike paths and
ensuring crosswalks are well-
marked could make a dif-
ference for pedestrians and
cyclists, he said. “I think the
answer is to create awareness.”
Weintraub also appreciates
the local arts scene.
“I have had a wonderful
time exploring all of the art
galleries,” he said. “We have
some talented artists here.”
He makes a point to spend
time at the ocean every day,
for “more than just a fleeting
glimpse.”
“I think we’re incredibly
fortunate to literally live at the
edge of the continent here,”
Weintraub said. “I don’t know
if I’m going to live here for the
next 65 years of my life, so I
might as well enjoy it every
day I can.”

“There’s a sense of commu-
nity support.”
Weintraub previously lived
in Portland. As the associate
regional director for the Inter-
national Mountain Biking
Association’s Pacific North-
west region, he worked on
mountain biking advocacy,
education and helping to pro-
vide access to trails.
“Being able to have a pos-
itive impact on my recre-
ational community across four
states … I think that’s a pretty
empowering thing to wake up
to every morning,” he said.
Weintraub’s passion for
racing bikes began when he
was 14. In graduate school, he
started a side business for Seat-
tle area bicycle events, such as
festivals and races. That led
him to work for regional and
state organizations, then the
International Mountain Biking
Association.
Weintraub holds bache-
lor’s and master’s degrees in
forestry from the University
of Washington. While study-
ing ecology, climate dynam-
ics and tree growth, he real-
ized his skills were best used
through policy and advocacy
work.
At the International Moun-
tain Biking Association, Wein-
traub educated communities
on how recreation can finan-
cially benefit cities. Working
on destination development
projects connected him to
Travel Oregon and eventually
to the Cannon Beach Chamber
of Commerce.
