Fishermen earn all-state football honors

Astoria’s first team all-state offen-

Seven Astoria players were
included on this year’s Class 4A
all-state football squad, announced
recently by The Oregonian.
Senior offensive lineman Keldon
Littell and senior receiver Ryan Palek
were the only selections to the first
team, which was dominated by North
Bend.
The state champion Bulldogs had
players at nine positions on the first
team, including Offensive Player of
the Year Daniel Ferenczi.
Defensive Player of the Year was
Cota Wakem of Cascade, and Cottage
Grove’s Gary Roberts earned Coach
of the Year honors.
Astoria earned another eight spots
on the second team or honorable men-
tion, including second team quarter-
back/defensive back Fridtjof Frems-
tad and kicker Andrew Schauermann.
The Fishermen had four players
on the second team defense. All-state

Januik is also now the Seaside boys basketball leader in career points, break-
ing the previous mark of 976 held by Matt Clark. After Saturday’s win, Januik had

coach Wayne Tinkle said that he
challenged his team at halftime to
come out of the locker room and
play with some toughness.
“We just basically said, ‘Let’s
man up and get after it,”’ Tinkle
said.
Kendal Manuel had 17 points
with four 3-pointers on Wednes-
day night as Oregon State broke
open a close game in the second
half to beat Kent State 69-50.
The game was back-and-forth
for much of the second half, but
the Beavers went on an 18-0
run, capped by a vicious Drew
Eubanks dunk, to take a 60-42
lead with 4:27 remaining.
JaQuori McLaughlin had
14 points and eight assists and
Eubanks added 13 points, six
rebounds and four blocks for the
Beavers (4-9), who snapped a
five-game losing streak.
“This was really big for us and
we’re just going to keep building
and building on it,” Manuel said.
Jimmy Hall had 14 points and
a career-high 19 rebounds and
Deon Edwin had 12 points for the
Golden Flashes (7-5).
Kent State outrebounded Ore-
gon State 49-39, including a 34-10
advantage in offensive boards, but
the Golden Flashes only shot 27.6
percent from the field.
Seaside boys hold off Pirates

COOS BAY — The Seaside Gulls
did not score their usual 80-plus
points Wednesday night — or even
60-plus — but the Gulls showed that
they can still win on an off night, as
they escaped Marshfield with a 56-46
win over the Pirates in a nonleague
boys basketball game in Coos Bay.
Seaside was held to a season-low
in points, and even trailed 32-29
late in the third quarter, following a

next Wednesday for the Pac-
12 opener for both teams.
Still, the Pirates closed to within
45-44, before Seaside was able to
close it out at the free throw line,
where the Gulls were 10-for-12 in the
fourth quarter. Three Marshfield start-
ers fouled eventually fouled out.
Chase Januik led Seaside with 18
points, followed by Jackson Januik
with 16.
Seaside improves to 7-0, and will
return home to close out 2016 with a
nonleague game against St. Helens
next Wednesday.
Pirates top Gull girls in overtime

COOS BAY — Marshfield trailed
13-2 just minutes into the game, but
the Pirates managed to overcome
the big first half deficit to score a
56-51 overtime victory over Sea-
side Wednesday afternoon, in a back-
and-forth nonleague girls basketball
game.
Tess Garrett’s basket with six sec-
onds left in regulation tied the game
at 48-48, and the Pirates outscored the
Gulls 8-3 in the extra quarter to snap
Seaside’s five-game win streak.
Maddi Utti and Sydney Villegas
scored eight points apiece in the first
half, as the Gulls left the floor with a
28-24 lead at the break.
The Pirates opened the third quar-
ter on a 10-0 run, highlighted by
3-pointers from Brandi Thompson
and sophomore Ravyn Miranda.
But a career game for Seaside’s
Bryre Babbitt kept the Gulls in it
throughout the second half, as the
junior scored three consecutive buck-
ets towards the end of the third period
to bring Seaside to within 39-38, and
her layup with 45 seconds left in reg-
ulation gave the Gulls a 45-44 lead.
Marshfield answered with a score
at the 31-second mark to retake the
lead, but the Gulls took it right back
when Villegas scored and was fouled
with 24 seconds remaining, giving
Seaside a 48-46 advantage.
Garrett scored the equalizer with
six seconds left in the fourth quar-
ter, and the Pirates’ sophomore made
5-of-8 free throws in overtime to help
Marshfield clinch the win.
Babbitt led Seaside with 16 points,
followed by Utti with 12. Ville-
gas fouled out early in the overtime
period with 11 points, while Jetta
Ideue added seven points.

scored 21 points and Garrett finished
with 19 for Marshfield.
The Pirates came into the game
ranked seventh in the latest 4A
coaches poll, just ahead of the No.
8-ranked Gulls.

the Gulls a 33-32 lead, and Seaside
would not trail again.
Hunter Thompson connected on

and Duncan Thompson’s bank shot
had the Gulls in front with five min-
utes left, 42-37.

spent enough time with Damian Lil-
lard in Portland to know exactly what
he was going to do in the waning sec-
onds Wednesday night.
“Dame to get the ball and Dame to
shoot it,” Matthews said.
The former Trail Blazers guard
pressured Lillard into missing a
potential game-winning 3-pointer at
the buzzer, and the Dallas Mavericks
held off a furious Portland rally for a
96-95 victory.
“Obviously, I’ve been his team-
mate so I know the kind of clutch
gene he has,” said Matthews, who
played in Portland from 2010-15.
“We ended up getting the stop that we
needed.”

Freeman says he’ll return to the
Ducks for his senior year.
Freeman, who was hampered
by injuries this season, announced
his decision through the school
Wednesday. Left tackle Tyrell
Crosby, sidelined for the season’s
last nine games with a foot injury,
went on social media to say he
would also return for his senior
season.
Freeman was the Ducks’ lead-
ing rusher this season with 945
yards in 11 games. He has rushed
for 4,146 yards over three sea-
sons with the Ducks, second only
to LaMichael James (5,082 yards)
on Oregon’s career rushing list.
“After consulting with my
family and giving this consider-
able thought, I feel this is the best
decision for me in regards to my
future on and off the field,” said
Freeman, a crime, law and society
major. “My education was one of
the most important reasons I chose
to come to Oregon and that prior-
ity hasn’t changed.”
Freeman was widely consid-
ered a candidate for the Heisman
Trophy going into the season, but
he was injured three weeks into
the season at Nebraska and missed
Oregon’s game against Colorado
the next week.
Oregon finished 4-8 overall
and at the bottom of the Pac-12
North standings at 2-7 — snap-
ping a run of nine straight winning
seasons in conference play.
Following a loss to rival Ore-
gon State in the final game of the
season, Freeman said he had not
made up his mind.
