NORTH BEND — A quick
basket and two turnovers gave
Seaside a 6-0 lead just seconds
into the game, and that set the
tone for the night, as the Lady
Gulls cruised to a 63-41 win
Tuesday night at North Bend
in a nonleague girls basketball
game.
Ranked eighth in the lat-
est 4A coaches poll, the Gulls
had everything going their way
in the first quarter, highlighted
by seven straight points from
Maddi Utti, whose three-point
play gave Seaside a 17-3 lead.
A basket by Anesha Smart
had the Gulls in front at the end
of the quarter, 22-9.
The lead reached 30-11
before the Bulldogs made a brief
run and closed to within 34-23 at
halftime.
Utti — who finished with a
game-high 29 points — put the
game away early in the third
with a pair of 3-pointers, with
additional scores from Sydney
Villegas, who finished with 21
points, as the senior duo com-
bined for 50 points.
The Gulls continue their road
trip Wednesday with an after-
noon game at Marshfield.

quarter led to a big win for the
Knappa Loggers Tuesday at Rain-
ier, in a nonleague boys basketball
game.
Trailing 12-7 after one quarter,
the Loggers outscored the Colum-
bians 21-6 in the second, on their
way to a 48-39 victory over 3A
Rainier.
“I’m really happy with the
win,” said Knappa coach Chris
Spencer. “It was ugly at times (19
Knappa turnovers), but we played
well for being off a week.”
Jason Miller had 14 points, 13
rebounds and five assists for the
Loggers (“all he didn’t do was
drive the bus,” Spencer said),
while Colton Weirup tossed in
14 points, which included four
3-pointers in the second quarter
run.
Dale Takalo added 12 points
for Knappa, which made 10-of-10

EUGENE — Oregon will return
from its holiday break on Christ-
mas night with a very large challenge
awaiting in a juggernaut that’s turned
even coach Dana Altman into a fan.
“I enjoy watching UCLA,” Alt-
man said of the Ducks’ next opponent
that’s scoring 97 points per game.
“They’re must-watch TV. ... They’re
ball movement is unbelievable, the
best I’ve seen in years.”
Jordan Bell scored a career-high
23 points and No. 20 Oregon beat
Fresno State 75-63 on Tuesday night
for its ninth straight victory.
Dylan Ennis added 13 points for
the Ducks (11-2), who finished non-
conference play on a 33-game home
winning streak.
Paul Watson scored 15 points and
Karachi Edo had 12 for the Bulldogs
(8-4), who pulled within 53-50 mid-
way through the second half before
five straight points by Bell gave Ore-
gon some breathing room.

game without scoring leader Chris

Notes: Oregon plays its eighth
of nine games without leaving
the state this month when No. 2
UCLA comes to Eugene on Dec.

the highest-ranked team to play
in Matthew Knight Arena since it
opened six years ago.
Boucher, who sprained his left ankle
in practice last Thursday but has since
shed his walking boot. In Boucher’s
absence, Bell shot 8 of 11 after going
7 of 8 and scoring 16 points against
UNLV on Saturday.
“He’s had two really good offen-
sive games and hit his free throws,”
Altman said. “With some of our other
guys struggling offensively, it’s good
that he gave us some firepower.”
Bell also had eight rebounds as the
teams battled to a 31-31 draw on the
glass. He hit 7 of 8 at the foul line as
Oregon finished 22 of 30 there to off-
set a 3-for-15 performance from the
3-point line.
“Jordan’s always been extremely
skilled around the basket,” teammate
Casey Benson said. “Now he’s just
taking his time. ... People can’t guard
him. It’s just been awesome to see
him playing so well.”
The Ducks used a 9-0 run to
take control at 31-17 late in the first
half. They made only 1 of 9 3-point
attempts but were 16 of 21 from inside
the arc to lead 39-25 at halftime.
Fresno State opened the second
half with a 15-6 run to get within
five points but finished 6 of 22 from
3-point range.
Fresno State’s Jahmel Taylor, sec-
ond in the nation in 3-point shoot-
ing at 59.3 percent, went 0 for 7 from
long range and finished with four
points, nine below his average.
Altman said he wasn’t certain
if Boucher, who will head home to
Toronto for the holiday break, would
be available for the start of Pac-12
play against the Bruins.
Cousins scores 55, Kings rally over Blazers
Associated Press
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Fined,
ejected and then retrieved from the
locker room, DeMarcus Cousins
capped a tumultuous day with his
dominant performance on the court.
Cousins returned from a brief
ejection in the fourth quarter and fin-
ished with a season-high 55 points,
ending a wild night for the hot-tem-
pered big man and sending the Sac-
ramento Kings past the Portland Trail
Blazers 126-121 on Tuesday.
Hours after he was fined by the
Kings for his profanity-laced tirade
against a newspaper columnist last
week, Cousins pulled down 13
rebounds and rallied Sacramento in
the fourth quarter.
“Kind of a crazy game,” Kings
coach Dave Joerger said. “Certainly
Cousins had a nice game. OK, that’s
an understatement. But I was very
impressed. That any of us who would
get thrown out in what we think is a
questionable deal, then to come back
and step out and make the free throw
was very impressive.”
Cousins hit two huge 3-point-
ers and scored 17 in the fourth, fall-
ing one point shy of his career high of
56. The win avenged an earlier over-
time loss this season in Portland and
NORTH BEND — The South
Coast saw the best in North Coast
basketball (as well as 4A bas-
ketball) Tuesday night, as North
Bend hosted Seaside for a non-
league boys’ contest.
And the No. 1-ranked Gulls
gave the fans all they wanted, with
an impressive 82-64 win over the
host Bulldogs.
Seaside put a lock on its sixth
straight victory with a flurry of
3-pointers in the third quarter.
Leading 42-35 at halftime, the
Gulls went ballistic in the third
period, with six 3-pointers from
Chase Januik and Hunter Thomp-
son (two apiece), Jackson Januik
and Attikin Babb.
Thompson had 14 points in the
quarter, and Chase Januik’s sec-
ond trey gave the Gulls a 70-47
lead.
Payton Westerholm’s 3-pointer
early in the fourth gave Seaside its
largest lead at 77-52.
Chase Januik led the Gulls with
21 points, followed by Wester-
holm with 20. Babb added 17, and
Thompson finished with 14.
“We didn’t defend well, and we
missed some opportunities early,”
said Seaside coach Bill Wester-
holm. “But I was happy with it.
We had a six-hour bus ride and the
eating schedule was a little weird.
“And they’re a big team,” he
said of the Bulldogs. “Six-7, 6-3,
6-2 … we’re going to be out-
matched like that every game.”
The 3-pointers in the third
quarter “came in a barrage,” he
said. “We had six in about a min-
ute-and-a-half, and I don’t think
we missed one that quarter.
“Jackson (Januik) and Hunter
didn’t score at all in the first half,
but we have some other guys off
the bench who are starting to step
up.”
North Bend was missing Brody
Lucero, the Bulldogs’ quarterback
in football, currently out with a
torn miniscus.

losing streak to the Blazers.
Cousins made 17 of 28 shots, con-
necting on five 3s, and 16 of 17 free
throws. He also had three blocks and
five of Sacramento’s 10 turnovers.
“No, we didn’t stop him,” Port-
land guard CJ McCollum said. “We
tried to make it difficult for him, but
he’s a skilled player. He’s got a lot of
ways to score. He hit some 3s tonight,
got to the free throw line, played bully
ball. He did a little bit of everything.”
McCollum scored 36 points and
Plumlee had a career-high 27 points
to go with 13 rebounds for the Blaz-
ers, who have dropped three straight
and seven of eight. Damian Lillard

3-pointers and had 17 points and
11 rebounds to help No. 25 Ore-
gon State beat Quinnipiac 75-60
in the semifinals of the Play4Kay
Shootout on Tuesday night.
Wiese passed Candice Wiggins
(Stanford, 2005-08) on a catch-
and-shoot from a step behind the
arc on the right wing. It was the
Beavers’ fourth straight 3-pointer,
capping a 12-4 run to make it
52-44 with 1:28 left in the third
quarter.
Wiggins held the previous
record at 295 career 3s. Wiese

Mikayla Pivec scored 18 for
the Beavers (10-1), who will face
undefeated Oklahoma State in
the championship on Wednes-
day night. The Bobcats play Long
Beach State for third place.
Sarah Shewan had 19 points
for Quinnipiac (8-4), which tied
it at 40 with a 12-4 run before the
Beavers pulled away.
