North Coast Chorale presents concerts
ASTORIA — The North
Coast Chorale will present
its winter concerts at 7 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 10 and at 2
p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11. The
concerts will take place at
the Clatsop Community Col-
lege Performing Arts Center,
located at 588 16th St. Tick-
ets are $10 and available at
the door.
Under the direction of
Denise Reed, this season the
chorale is featuring Benja-
min Britten’s “A Ceremony
of Carols” with local harpist
Cheryl Walker and other
well-loved traditional holi-
day music.
Britten’s “A Ceremony of
Carols” was composed while
he was traveling on a Swed-
ish cargo vessel. On his way
to England after a vacation
in America, Britten stopped
in Nova Scotia and obtained
a copy of “The English Gal-
axy of Shorter Poems.” He
used five poems to fashion
“Ceremony of Carols.”
Although crossing the
Atlantic amid the presence
of several German U-boats,
he managed to complete this
composition during the voy-
age. It features harp accom-
paniment and was published
in 1955.
This year, as an addi-
tional treat, the North Coast
Chorale’s concerts will fea-
ture guest appearances. At
the Saturday performance,
enjoy music from the Sea-
side High School Jazz Choir
directed by Vanessa Rush.
At the Sunday performance,
hear selections performed
by the Ilwaco High School
Concert Choir directed by
Rachel Lake.
