Oregon businesses suggest
compromise with lawmakers
BEND — Representatives from some of Oregon’s biggest busi-
nesses have expressed a willingness to consider tax increases to help
fund state services as long as legislators are willing to compromise.
The Bulletin of Bend reports that at the Oregon Leadership
Summit on Monday businesses joined school districts, Republi-
cans and some Democrats in calling for the state to curb govern-
ment spending, particularly in the state’s retirement system for pub-
lic employees.
PacifiCorp Transmission CEO Pat Reiten says business leaders
are willing to talk about revenues, but that that conversation needs
to include talks about costs and cost management.
Tillamook County Creamery Association CEO Patrick Criteser
says unless the state addresses the retirement system, any new taxes
will just be going to pay old obligations.
Trump promises to heal divide,
plans visit to Ohio State
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — President-elect Donald Trump
promised to “heal our divisions and unify our country” as he pre-
pares to meet with some of the victims of last week’s car-and-knife
attack at Ohio State University.
“When Americans are unified there is nothing we cannot do —
nothing!” Trump told the crowd at a rally Tuesday night in Fayette-
ville, North Carolina. “I’m asking you to dream big again as Amer-
icans. I’m asking you to believe in yourselves.”
The Republican businessman largely stuck to the script —
and, in a change, even stopped the crowd when it started to boo
the media — and avoided some of the score-settling and scorched-
earth rhetoric that defined his campaign and was present again last
week in Cincinnati.
Trump is expected to visit Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday,
according to a person familiar with the plans but not authorized to
discuss them before they are announced.

Syrian rebels pull back further
as military gains in Aleppo
BEIRUT — Syrian government troops and allied militiamen
seized more ground in Aleppo’s ancient quarters today, further wid-
ening their control over an enclave in the divided city that has been
in rebel hands since 2012, Syria’s state media and an opposition
monitoring group said.
With the latest gains, the endgame for Syria’s largest city, which
has been carved up between the government and the rebel side for
the past four years, appeared to draw even closer. If Aleppo — Syr-
ia’s former commercial hub — is captured by government troops, it
would be a turning point in the conflict, putting the four largest cities
in Syria and the coastal region back under state control.
Rebel defenses have collapsed rapidly in the face of a mas-
sive government assault backed by Russia and thousands of Irani-
Gambia leader’s upset heartens
families of the disappeared
KANIFING, Gambia — Fatoumata Sawaneh tried to hold back
tears while talking about her father, one of hundreds of people who
disappeared during the 22-year reign of President Yahya Jammeh in
this tiny West African country.
Imam Ousman Sawaneh was arrested in October 2015, picked
up as he led volunteers clearing grass in the local cemetery. His
detention, for unknown reasons, bewildered his family.
“We don’t have access to see him,” she says, breaking down into
sobs. “We are hoping that we will see him soon.”
Now, after the president’s stunning defeat in last week’s elec-
tion, Fatoumata and others are hoping those who vanished can
come home.
Jammeh has long been accused by human rights workers of
heading a government that tortures opponents and silences dissent.
Hundreds of Gambians have been arbitrarily detained for years,
often without access to family members or lawyers.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Investigators honed in on a refrigerator
and other electrical appliances as possible causes of the fire at a
warehouse in Oakland that killed 36 people, as crews were set to
finish their search for bodies.
The death toll in the most lethal building fire in the U.S. in more
than a decade was not expected to go higher.
A refrigerator was a potential source of the fire, but it was too
soon to say for sure, said Jill Snyder, special agent in charge of the
San Francisco office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms
and Explosives.
Snyder said investigators were looking at “anything electrical”
on the first floor of the warehouse near the origin of the blaze.
“We have no indication that this was intentionally set,” she said.

captured Aleppo’s centrally located al-Shaar neighborhood from the
rebels, security nearly three quarters of the besieged enclave less
than two weeks after launching their ground offensive.
The state news agency SANA said today that Syrian forces estab-
lished control over two districts north of the Aleppo Citadel in the
heart of the city — the Aghiour and Bab al-Hadid neighborhoods —
after rebels abandoned positions and retreated further south.
The new gains have choked the rebels, forcing them to pull back
to other parts of the Old City, said the Britain-based Syrian Obser-
vatory for Human Rights, an activist group that tracks Syria’s civil
war, now in its sixth year.
