First loss for
Lady Jays
JEWELL — The Jewell girls
basketball team suffered its fi rst
loss of the season Tuesday night
at home, as Willamette Valley
Christian posted a 37-29 win over
the Lady Jays in a Casco League
opener.
Alyscia Littlepage scored 10
points for Jewell, which slips to
3-1 overall. Emma Guillen had 10

Ilwaco girls score
38-point win
PUYALLUP, Wash. — It was

League favorites Tuesday night,
as the Ilwaco girls basketball team
cruised past Chief Leschi, 71-33.
After a close win over R.A.
Long in the season opener, Ilwaco
has won its last three games by a
combined 115 points (205-90).

Gulls boys win
YAMHILL — Seaside broke
open a close game at halftime by
outscoring Yamhill-Carlton 21-13
in the third quarter, on its way
to an 83-65 win over the Tigers
Tuesday night, in a Class 4A non-
league boys basketball game.
The Gulls held a slim 41-40
lead at halftime over the former
Cowapa League team, before out-
scoring Yamhill 42-25 in the sec-
ond half.
“We were real lackadaisical in
the fi rst half,” said Seaside coach
Bill Westerholm. “We came out
slow, and we just didn’t give Yam-
hill enough respect in the fi rst half.
“I thought the kids responded
well in the second half,” he said.
“The beginning and end of the
third quarter and into the fourth,
we played better defensively.”
Two last names — Januik and
Thompson — combined to score
66 of Seaside’s 85 points.
Chase Januik and Jackson
Januik scored 21 points apiece to
lead the way; Attikin Babb added
14 points; Hunter Thompson scored
13 and Duncan Thompson fi nished
with 11 for the Gulls, now 2-0.
Seaside plays at Corbett Friday.

The Warriors held a slim 27-24
lead at halftime, before gradually
building a 13-point lead with four

Holt was 11-for-21 from the
fi eld, 6-of-7 at the free throw line,

South Florida head coach Willie Taggart shouts instructions to his team against Central Florida, in Tampa, Fla., on Nov. 26.
Associated Press
S
outh Florida football coach Willie Tag-
gart has informed the school that he is
leaving to become the coach at Oregon,
a person with direct knowledge of the situa-
tion told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of ano-
nymity Wednesday because neither school
was prepared to make an offi cial announce-
ment. ESPN fi rst reported Oregon had hired
Taggart.
Taggart is in his fourth season at USF and
has gone 18-7 the last two seasons, including
10-2 this year. He also spent three seasons as
coach of Western Kentucky, his alma mater,
and was an assistant coach at Stanford under
Jim Harbaugh.
Oregon fi red Mark Helfrich last week after
the Ducks went 4-8.
Taggart, 40, is the fi rst coach Oregon has
hired from outside the program since 1976.
The Ducks’ previous three coaches, Mike
Bellotti, Chip Kelly and Helfrich, were all
assistants who were promoted.
Taggart will be the fi rst black head foot-
ball coach at Oregon. The length and terms of
his contract with the Ducks were not immedi-
ately released.
Taggart was 16-20 at Western Kentucky,
taking over when it was fi rst transitioning
to FBS. He went 7-5 in his last two seasons
with the Hilltoppers and then moved to USF,
not far from where he grew up in Bradenton,
Florida.
It took two seasons and a change in offen-
sive philosophy from more pro-style, West
Coast schemes to a spread, but he now has the
25th-ranked Bulls rolling. They fi nished sec-
ond in the American Athletic Conference East
Division to Temple and will play South Caro-
lina on Dec. 29 in the Birmingham Bowl.
This is the second straight day the AAC
has lost one of its best coaches, and the third
the conference has lost since Thanksgiving
weekend. Temple’s Matt Rhule was hired
by Baylor on Monday and Tom Herman left
Houston for Texas on Nov. 26.
