Young Gulls battle
in tough district
Seaside builds wrestling program
By GARY HENLEY

There will be lots of youth on the mat this season in the
Seaside wrestling room.
Second-year coach Dan Taylor had a solid turnout, with
19 the second week of practice … but of those 19, 11 are
freshman and five are sophomores, as the Gulls continue to
build their high school program.
Seaside performed well in local tournaments and invita-
tionals, but the Gulls found themselves outmatched (as did
most teams) in the Special District 1 4A regional tournament.
Crook County dominated the meet, while the Gulls man-
aged just 32 points to finish 11th out of 11 teams.
As young as the Gulls are, they’re hoping to climb the
ladder this year, with returning placers from past Cowapa
League meets.
Junior Donald LaTourette qualified for regionals two
years ago at 120 pounds, and will be competing at either
126 or 132 this year; while the team’s only senior — Shane
Smith — placed third at 120 in last year’s Cowapa League
meet.
Others with varsity experience include sophomore
Alfonso Alcantar, while sophomore Gio Ramirez is coming
off an all-league football season.
Third coach
in three years
The Seaside swim team
made the most of their num-
bers last season. With their
second coach in two years,
the Gulls still had one dis-
trict champion and sent
eight swimmers to the state
meet.
And now the Gulls are
back for more, and hoping
to do it again with their third
coach in three years.
Shane Spell replaces
Mike Kadi as the Seaside
coach, a year after Kadi
replaced Alex Reed.
Some of the names of the
past have graduated (Beau-
doin, Coventry, Tadei, etc.),
but Spell brings back some
of last year’s talent, along
with a few promising new-
comers as the Gulls get set
to jump in the pool and a
new season.

Swimmers from New-
port and Tillamook scored
most of the victories in last
year’s District 1/4A cham-
pionships. Of the 22 total
events, the Cubs and Chee-
semakers won 15, while the
Tillamook girls and New-
port boys swam off with the
team championships.
The Seaside girls placed
fourth, and the boys sixth.

Seaside’s lone district win,
as she took first in the 100-
yard butterfly.
The Gulls sent more
swimmers to state as wild
cards, including the girls’
200 medley relay (the four-
some of Kendy Lin, Har-
kins, Maya McGill and Cla-
risse Coventry took second);
the boys’ 200- and 400-yard
freestyle relays (Alex Tadei,
Brad Rzewnicki, Luke Lil-
jenwall and Sam Beaudoin
placed second in both); and
the girls’ 200-yard freestyle
relay (third).
Lin and McGill are back
for the girls, while Liljen-
wall and Rzewnicki return
for the Seaside boys, along
with seniors Will Garvin
and James Kennedy.

Carter is co-Player of the Year; Birge GK of the Year

The Seaside boys soccer
team came up short of a sec-
ond straight Cowapa League
title this fall, but the Gulls
were still rewarded for another
fine season on the field.
For the second year in a
row, Seaside junior Colton
Carter was named the league’s
Player of the Year, sharing the
award this season with Tilla-
mook senior Seth Rumage.
And the North Coast’s fine
tradition of outstanding goal-
keepers continued, as Astoria
senior Kyle Birge was selected
as the Cowapa League’s Goal-
keeper of the Year.
Tillmook’s Brian Reynolds
was named Coach of the Year,
after leading the Cheesemak-
ers to a league title.
In all, the Gulls landed
seven players on the all-league
squad, to Tillamook’s eight.
