In the 1600s, the Wampanoag Nation had about
seventy thousand people living in 67 villages.
This map shows some of them. The large print
shows the Wampanoag name of a village. The
small print gives the modern name.
hen the
Pilgrims
arrived at what is
now Plymouth,
Massachusetts,
they met native
peoples who had
lived in the area
for thousands of
years. Their name,
Wampanoag,
means “People of
the First Light.”
This name was
chosen because
they lived on the
east coast and
they received the
light of dawn
before anyone to
the west.
