Tainted Ramirez,
Rodriguez on
Hall ballot
Big plays, disputed calls, lasers
highlight NFL’s return to Mexico
Associated Press
NEW YORK — Ste-
roids-tainted stars Manny Ramirez
and Ivan Rodriguez are on base-
ball’s Hall of Fame ballot for the
first time along with Vladimir
Guerrero.
Jeff Bagwell is the top holdover
on the 2017 Baseball Writers’ Asso-
ciation of America 34-player bal-
lot announced Monday. He fell 15
votes short of the required 75 per-
cent in 2016 voting.
Ramirez was suspended for
50 games in 2009 while with the
Los Angeles Dodgers for using a
banned female fertility drug. He
retired in 2011 rather than face a
100-game suspension after testing
positive for a performance-enhanc-
ing substance. He applied for rein-
statement that December, and his
suspension for the second failed
test was cut from 100 games to 50
because he sat out nearly all of the
2011 season.
Ramirez did not play in the
majors again, although he did
appear at Triple-A from 2012-14.
Roger Clemens and Barry
Bonds, also tainted by steroids alle-
gations, are on the ballot for the
fifth time. After a change on voting
eligibility rules eliminated some
retired writers, Clemens rose to
45.2 percent and Bonds to 44.3 per-
cent in last year’s voting.
Players remain on the ballot
for up to 10 years, provided they
receive at least 5 percent of the vote.
Results will be announced Jan. 18.

barehanded grab the Best Fan
Catch of the Year. The honor was

Performers spell out “NFL” during a halftime presentation between the Houston Texans and the Oakland Raiders in Mexico City.

EXICO CITY — While dealing
with a green laser shining in Brock
Osweiler’s eye and the high eleva-
tion unique to a game in Mexico City, the
Houston Texans feel like a few questionable
spots by the officials on a key fourth-quar-
ter drive made the difference in their loss to
Oakland.
Derek Carr threw his second touchdown
pass of the fourth quarter shortly after a dis-
puted fourth-down stop and the Oakland
Raiders went on to beat the Texans 27-20 on
Monday night in the second regular season
game played in Mexico.
“Very tough loss,” defensive end Jade-
veon Clowney said. “We should have won the
game. We are trying to win every game. You
don’t leave the game in the ref’s hands.”
The contest turned midway through the
fourth quarter on a matter of inches for the
Texans (6-4). On a third-and-2 from the Oak-
land 16, Lamar Miller ran wide and appeared
to get the first down before being tackled by
Malcolm Smith. But the officials spotted it
short of the marker and coach Bill O’Brien
opted not to challenge.
O’Brien then went for it on fourth-and-
inches instead of kicking the go-ahead field
goal. Akeem Hunt ran up the middle and the
Texans thought he got the first down, only to
have it marked about an inch short . O’Brien
challenged this time but with no clear angle,
the play was not overturned.
“I felt like we needed a touchdown there
and obviously we did,” O’Brien said. “And so
we went for it. Thought we had it, looked like
it was clear that we had it, so I challenged it
and they said we didn’t have it. They said the
call on the field stands, so I don’t know.”
Seahawks’ Thomas, Shead have hamstring strains
By TIM BOOTH
AP Sports Writer
RENTON, Wash. — Pete Car-
roll spent most of his time Monday
talking about injuries. He never was
asked about the Seattle Seahawks
taking a three-game lead in their
division.
Seattle’s 26-15 win over Philadel-
phia came with a cost that could leave
the Seahawks short-handed going to
Tampa Bay on Sunday.
“It’s amazing to see it like that. I
made mention of it just a week ago,
we had one guy with a turned ankle
coming out of the game,” Carroll
said. “To see all these guys on both
sides of the ball get nicked, particu-
larly the running backs took a big hit,
it’s just unusual. It was a crazy day
yesterday.”
Seattle’s offensive and defen-
sive backfields were left thinned due
to key injuries in the victory over
the Eagles that gave the Seahawks a
three-game cushion over Arizona in
the NFC West.
The most serious injury was a
fractured shoulder blade by running
back C.J. Prosise. Making his second
straight start, Prosise had a 72-yard
touchdown run in the first quarter, but

was injured just before halftime.
Carroll said Prosise will not need
surgery, but the team is still a cou-
ple of weeks away from gathering
a precise timeframe if he will return
this season. Prosise’s injury and a
high-ankle sprain by backup Troy-
maine Pope left Seattle so thin at run-
ning back on Sunday that backup
quarterback Trevone Boykin had one
carry in the fourth quarter.
