Watershed council
seeks board members
NEHALEM — The Lower
Nehalem Watershed Coun-
cil (LNWC) is seeking appli-
cations for its 2017 board
of directors. The duties of a
LNWC board member include
providing leadership and
direction to the council, guid-
ing the work of the council,
reviewing project and grant
proposals, and regular atten-
dance at monthly meetings.
LNWC’s board meets
monthly, typically the first
Wednesday of the month, from
3 to 5 p.m. at Nehalem City
Hall, 35900 Eighth St. The
next meeting is Dec. 7. New
board members will be elected
at the Jan. 12 annual Meeting
& Speaker Series event at 7
p.m. at the Pine Grove Com-
munity House, 225 Laneda
Ave. in Manzanita.

Food for Kids gets boost
from Dutch Bros Coffee
The Daily Astorian
The Astoria Food for Kids
Program is the recipient of
this year’s Dutch Bros Cof-
fee “Buck for Kids Day” fund-
raiser. The $1,566 grant will
be used to help fund the com-
munity outreach project; this is
the fourth school year that the
Society of St Vincent de Paul –
St. Mary Star of the Sea Con-
ference has operated the pro-
gram in the Astoria School
District (grades K-8).
The Food for Kids Program
provides weekend backpacks
to help stop hunger for local
students. A typical backpack
contains a breakfast, lunch
and snacks for each day of the
weekend. Last school year the
program provided 1,411 food
backpacks to Astor Elemen-
tary, Lewis and Clark Elemen-
tary and Astoria Middle School
students. Currently, there are
42 students participating in the
program, it is anticipated that
over 1,500 food backpacks
will be sent home this school
year.

Sgt. Goodding named
Law Officer of the Year
Marine Corps League Daniel E. Crock-
ett Detachment 1228 has announced that
the 2016 Law Officer of the Year is Seaside
Police Department’s Sgt. Jason Goodding
(posthumously), and the 2016 Runner-up is
Seaside Police Officer David Davidson.
Chief David Ham was present to accept
the award on Sgt. Goodding’s family’s
behalf Nov. 12 at the Uptown Café in War-
renton during the 241st Marine Corps Birth-
day Celebration, hosted by the detachment.
In the past two years, due to financial
strains, the detachment was unable to con-
tinue to host the Law Enforcement Officer
of the Year Awards. The detachment is now
able to continue the program.

Samaritan’s Purse
Through Monday, North
Coast residents can donate
gift-filled shoe boxes for boys
and girls around the world
through a Samaritan’s Purse
project, Operation Christ-
mas Child. To fill the boxes,
donations of school sup-
plies, hygiene items, notes of
encouragement and toys, are
needed for children overseas
living in extreme poverty or
affected by war, disease and
natural disaster.
There are two places to
drop off donations. The first
is North Coast Family Fellow-
ship, 2245 N. Wahanna Road
in Seaside; drop off times are
6 to 9 p.m. tonight, 9 a.m. to
3 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2
p.m. Sunday, and 8 to 10 a.m.
Monday. The second location
is New Life Church, 405 First
Avenue N. in Ilwaco, Wash-
ington; the hours are 9 a.m. to
2 p.m. today and Monday, 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 8
a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

a 2002 graduate of Astoria High School, where she was three
sport all league, and graduated from Western Oregon Univer-

and moved to Dallas in 2010.

“Happy Are The … Discov-
ering Joy — The Beatitudes”
a new book by author and
Cannon Beach resident Steve
Hudgik. This is his second
Christian book, and the first in
what is planed to be a series of
short books about the teach-
ings of Jesus.
Hudgik is a missionary
who is serving as the pastor of
Cannon Beach Bible Church.
He is also the executive direc-
tor of the Move to Assurance
(MTA) ministry, which is
