5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2016 Trees: ‘A lot of people got burned in the last decade’ Continued from Page 1A In terms of supply, the shortage isn’t so severe that retailers will end up with empty tree lots, said Betty Malone, co-owner of Sunrise Tree Farm near Philomath. “I think everybody will get something, just maybe not the species or size they want,” Malone said. Much of the is shortage was caused by farmers getting out of the tree business during the recent glut, which suppressed prices, she said. Between 2010 and 2015, the number of Christmas tree growers dropped more than 30 percent, from 699 to 485, according to Oregon Department of Agriculture data. Fewer trees Tree sales in Oregon plummeted 26 per- cent during that time, from 6.4 million trees to 4.7 million trees, according to a survey by U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Meanwhile farmers were planting fewer trees than they were selling. About 3.7 million trees were planted in 2015, down from 5.6 million in 2010, according to the statistics service. “A lot of people got burned in the last decade,” said Casey Grogan, whose family owns Silver Bells Christmas Tree Farm near Silverton. Planting Christmas trees has also appealed to fewer farmers due to growth in alternative crops, such as hazelnuts and grape vines, Grogan said. Grogan said he is worried that high prices could push some consumers toward artifi cial trees, but he said growers need to recoup years of losses. “There’s ground to make up fi nancially for people who stuck it out through the over- supply,” he said. “We need higher prices to stay in the game.” Drakes Crossing Christmas Trees, which also grows seedlings, is cautiously increas- ing production as the industry’s fi nancial out- look improves, said Jan Hupp, its manager. “We’re not going whole hog, but we are doing it,” Hupp said. With few seedlings in the pipeline, it’s unlikely the Christmas tree industry will face another major surplus until 2025, he said. However, the industry will likely again swing into overproduction eventually, Hupp said. “Name a single commodity crop that doesn’t have a cycle like that,” he said. “It’s going to be good for a while, but not forever.” Land conservancy to hold one-day tree sale Buying tree supports restoration goals By LYRA FONTAINE The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Dreaming of a “green” Christmas? The North Coast Land Conser- vancy is selling trees from Boneyard Ridge Habitat Reserve 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 4. “The trees look really beautiful,” the con- servancy’s Stewardship Director Melissa Reich said. “It will be a cool opportunity for people who want to feel good about where their trees come from this holiday season.” The trees will be from a stand of young fi rs that the conservancy is thinning to create a healthy forest on Boneyard Ridge. The prop- erty, acquired by the conservancy in July, is a former commercial tree farm. “They planted to maximize timber produc- tion,” Reich said. “Our goal is to create an old - growth forest in the future. We need to thin the trees down so that they will grow faster and not compete with each other.” After the holidays, the conservancy requests that people return their Boneyard Ridge trees to the Circle Creek Conservation Center. The returned trees will be placed in waterways at Boneyard Ridge or Circle Creek, where they will serve as refuge for juvenile coho salmon and contribute to the food chain for coho and other wildlife. “We’re doing large-scale restoration on Circle Creek so we can add them to the creek or some of the off-channel wetlands,” Reich said. “It helps create more structure and shade, and the nutrients break down. It’s good for amphibians and fi sh.” The conservancy requests a donation of $100 for each tree. These donations and the trees’ eventual use as habitat will help support the conservancy’s restoration work. Trees will be sold at the conservancy’s Cir- cle Creek Conservation Center in Seaside . Most trees are noble fi rs, about 5 feet tall or higher, with sturdy branches and an airy struc- ture. Some grand fi rs may be available. Trees will be freshly cut the previous day, and it is encouraged to come early for the best selection. Circle Creek Conservation Center is at the end of Rippet Road in Seaside , on the west side of U.S. 101, one-seventh of a mile north of the junction with U.S. 26. Follow the road west and north a short distance, passing a gravel quarry on your left, to where it ends at the big barn.
