take Rookie of
the Year honors

Corey Seager won the NL
Rookie of the Year award
unanimously.
Michael Fulmer took the AL
honor — and that vote wasn’t all
that close, either.
Seager and Fulmer were
announced as the winners Mon-
day night, when votes from the
Baseball Writers’ Association of
America were made public. Sea-
ger’s victory was almost a fore-
gone conclusion after he hit .308
with 26 home runs and 72 RBIs
this year for the Los Angeles
Dodgers. Fulmer, on the other
hand, had to hold off a late chal-
lenge from New York Yankees
catcher Gary Sanchez, who hit 20
home runs in only 53 games.
Fulmer’s season-long contri-
butions for Detroit won out. The
right-hander went 11-7 with a 3.06
ERA in 26 starts for the Tigers. He
ended up receiving 26 of 30 first-
place votes from the BBWAA,
outdistancing Sanchez by a total
of 142 points to 91.

OVINGTON, Wash. — One of the top contenders at
the Washington 1B level escaped with a win Friday
night, as Naselle scored a fourth-quarter touchdown for
a 34-28 win over Rainier Christian at Kentwood High School.
Erik Lund’s 3-yard touchdown run with 5:25 remaining
proved to be the winning score for the Comets, who advance to
the quarterfinals of the Class 1B state playoffs.
Naselle will play at Lummi Nation (northwest of Belling-
ham) Friday or Saturday.
The Comets (7-3 overall) had beaten Rainier Christian ear-
lier in the season (36-14), but the Mustangs put up a battle the
second time around and took Naselle into the final quarter, tied
28-28.
Naselle led 8-6 after one quarter, on a 12-yard run by Donny
Edwards. Short touchdown runs by Carson Bergeson helped the
Comets to a 22-20 lead at halftime. Jacob Scrabeck, who rushed
for 101 yards on 20 attempts, scored on a 4-yard run in the third
quarter.
Comet quarterback Cole Dorman was 17-of-28 passing for
256 yards. Brian Smith had seven receptions for 118 yards.
The winner of this week’s game will play Nov. 26 against the

CORVALLIS — Oregon State
sophomore wide receiver Seth
Collins is being treated at a hospi-
tal for an undisclosed ailment, the
university confirmed.
Coach Gary Andersen would
not comment Monday on Collins’
status because of privacy issues.
“We’re going to support Seth
and we’re going to be there for
him in any way we possibly can,”
Andersen said. “My thoughts and
prayers are with him, just like the
team.”
Collins, the Beavers’ for-
mer quarterback who switched to
receiver this year, has caught 36
passes for 418 yards this season.
He caught a pair of passes for 44
yards last weekend at UCLA.
Giants heading
toward playoffs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.
— That four-year playoff drought
could soon be nearing an end for
the New York Giants.
Riding the play of their big-
bucks defense and the gutsy
play-calling of rookie coach
Ben McAdoo , the Giants (6-3)
posted their first four-game win-
ning streak since 2013 by beating
the Cincinnati Bengals 21-20 on
Monday night.
Eli Manning threw three
touchdown passes, with the big-
gest being a 3-yard toss to rookie

CENTRALIA, Wash. — The
Ilwaco Fishermen did not give up
their season without a battle Saturday,
as the Fishermen nearly knocked off
second-ranked and undefeated Toledo
Saturday, in a first-round game of the
Class 2B state playoffs.
Toledo held a slim 20-14 lead
going into the final quarter, before
scoring two touchdowns in the final
period for a 35-14 win at Centralia’s
Tiger Stadium.
The Indians improve to 11-0 and
will play La Conner in a state quarter-
final game later this week. Ilwaco fin-
ishes 7-4 overall.
Ilwaco trailed 20-6 at halftime, but
the Fishermen scored on their first
drive of the second half, capped by
Brandon McMullen’s 6-yard touch-
down run, pulling Ilwaco to within 6
points.
That’s where the score stayed until
the 8:51 mark of the fourth quar-
ter, when Toledo’s Keyton Wallace
sprinted 33 yards for a touchdown for
a two-score lead.
Four minutes later, Toledo team-
mate Dylan Hoiseck scored the
