3A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2016 Donkey basketball event raises money and hope Trumped up Games at Armory benefit Shriners By EDWARD STRATTON The Daily Astorian The scoring was minimal, but so was the poop on the court. A five-team, five-on-five donkey basketball tournament at the Astoria Armory Satur- day raised at least $1,500 for the Al Kader Shriners of Clat- sop County. The home-court Astoria Armory Donkey Boys rode to the championship over teams from Medix Ambulance, Seaside Police Department and Tongue Point Job Corps Center. The event benefited the Shriners, which provides financial support for screen- ing and care for certain con- ditions treated at the nonprofit Shriners Hospital for Chil- dren in Portland. The group also helps organize the East- West Shrine Game, an all-star match between the best Ore- gon senior high school foot- ballers on each side of the state that also supports the hospital. “Donkey basketball has been something that quite a few of the (Shriners) clubs put on,” said Victor Kee, president of the local Shriners chap- ter. Volunteers from the Ever- green Masonic Lodge in Sea- side also staffed the event. Kee said the money made from the tournament will sup- port an April banquet at the Astoria Masonic Lodge hon- oring the local additions to the East-West Shrine Game. Herding cats Five-person teams duked it out in Saturday’s tournament, four in the saddle and one in a circle at center court trying to distribute and steal inbounds passes. “I had a better time herd- ing cats than trying to get these guys to” cooperate, said Steven Zamora, a driver for Medix Ambulance who at one point was thrown from the saddle when his ride started bucking. The first match started with the donkeys taking their nov- ice riders over the court barri- ers and around the gym, to the delight of the 100 or so spec- tators. The donkeys, from Ici- cle Outfitters in Leavenworth, Washington, challenged riders to control the reins and shoot, often one-handed, from a slow trot. Fast breaks turned into slow stampedes, with riders trying to outrun defenses and direct their donkeys toward the hoop for a layup. “At first it was really hard,” said Ayelech Bushnell, on the first of Tongue Point’s two teams, adding that some Edward Stratton/The Daily Astorian Steven Zamora, a driver for medix, attempts a layup during a donkey basketball tournament Saturday at the Astoria Armory. Her team beat the Sea- side Police in the afternoon’s first game and eventually fell to the Donkey Boys, made up partially from members of the Armory Skatepark downstairs, in the final. Providing care Robin Koustik, the Armory’s lone employee, sat this tournament out. But for the former Shriners patient, helping the group and playing in previous tournaments is like giving back. Koustik was born with a congenitally deformed left leg and soon ended up a patient at the Shriners hospital in Port- land. The hospitals treat club- foot, hand disorders, limb defi- ciencies and discrepancies, hip disorders, scoliosis, brit- tle bone disease, juvenile idio- pathic arthritis and orthopedic problems associated with cere- bral palsy and split spine. The care is provided regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. “I have had 29 surgeries on my left leg,” Koustik said. “I lived in Shriners from age 1 to 3. They covered me until I was 21.” Koustik said that while she was in the hospital, she often spent half a year in crutches or a wheelchair, with con- tinual visits by Shriners and Masons to lift her spirits. She now plays for the Shanghaied Roller Dolls and said the hos- pital’s care helped make her limp barely noticeable. “That made me want to be as active as possible, because you only have it for a short period of time, whether you’re healthy or not,” she said. Kee said the Shriners used to do two medical screening events a year, but now encour- age kids who might have the conditions listed to get screened by doctors. He added that many doctors donate their time for the screenings. “If cost is an issue, we’ll make sure it gets screened,” he said.
