Astoria: Advances to play Cottage Grove Friday
Continued from Page 12A

After a two-week layoff, the Fishermen
played their best overall game of the season.
“It felt good. It was a real solid win against
a good team,” said Astoria coach Howard Rub.
“It was nice to be explosive again, because we
obviously weren’t that explosive two weeks ago
against Scappoose. It felt good to put those kind
of numbers up again.”
Senior Fridtjof Fremstad — who has pretty
much cemented his status as an all-state quarter-
back — completed 16-of-20 passes for 342 yards
and two touchdowns.
And he did even more damage on the ground,
carrying 10 times for 104 yards and five TDs.
Other than Fremstad’s five rushing touch-
downs, two plays that stood out were his two
touchdown passes — which were more runs than
throws.
Two simple screen passes to the edge resulted
in touchdowns that covered 72 yards (Ryan
Palek) and 58 yards (Olaf Englund).
“We started clicking once we started get-
ting the ball to the edge,” Rub said. “The flanker
screens were really effective. We thought they
had a chance to be, provided for what we saw
on film.”
The Fishermen were unable to score on their
first two offensive possessions of the game —
after that, they did pretty much whatever they

wanted. Astoria traveled 65 yards in four plays on
its third series, Fremstad capping the drive with a
35-yard TD run;
The fourth possession — 54 yards in six
plays, Fremstad running it in from 7 yards out;
The Fishermen struck quickly on possession
No. 5 — one play, 72 yards on a screen pass to
Palek;
And Astoria’s last offensive series of the first
half — which started with 1:50 remaining —
went 57 yards in seven plays, Fremstad scoring
on a 9-yard run with 40 seconds left.
The Fishermen scored on their first three pos-
sessions of the second half as well, including
another one-play drive on their first series of the
third quarter, as Fremstad tossed a screen pass to
Englund, who took it 58 yards for the touchdown.
“We saw (on film) their corners bailed quick,
and we had good blocking on the edge,” Englund
said. “We just wanted to get out in the open space,
and let the playmakers make plays.”
Open all night, Englund finished with a
career-high eight catches for 190 yards. Palek
caught four passes for 109 yards.
“My cousin, Fridtjof, did a good job of getting
the ball to me,” Englund said. “He got the ball to
us in the open field, and we went to work. It’s fun
when everything is clicking.”
Fremstad ended the next two drives with
touchdown runs of 8 and 14 yards, as the Fish-
ermen moved the ball at will on the Gladiators.
“Fremstad was as fresh as he’s been since
early September,” Rub said. “The break allowed
us to work on some things, fundamentally. We
were pretty solid, defensively. A hundred times
better (than Astoria’s 49-42 win over Gladstone
in Week 2).
“Gladstone was a little banged up and missing
some key guys (freshman Hudson Meyer started
at quarterback, in place of 6-foot-3 senior Logan
Saltares), but that’s still a really tough offense to
defend.”
Englund added, “The scout team did a great
job this week, and we used that time get better,
work on our reads and get some guys healthy. We
had a rough start, but we had a game plan going
in, and we followed it.”
After not scoring on its first two drives, the
Fishermen scored on six of their next seven.
“Fritz had great command of the offense after
the first two series,” Rub said. “I was real pleased
with his decisions to run. And you can’t say
enough about what we did defensively. Keldon
Littell was a monster up front, (Samboy) Tuim-
ato and (Tyler) Lyngstad were great at ‘backer,
and the secondary did a solid job.”
