Seaside Elks Lodge tests
vision for Head Start

SEASIDE — On Oct. 17,
Seaside Elks Lodge mem-
bers assisted with eye screen-
ing of 34 Seaside Head Start
students ages 3 to 5. An infra-
red camera, the Plus Optics
Vision Screener, is used to
test for problems, including
“lazy eye.” Any child show-
ing a need for further testing is
referred for more screenings.
The Elks Children’s Eye
Clinic is the major charitable
project of the Oregon State
Elks Association. Thanks to
grants from the Oregon State
Elks Association, the eye
clinic gives free vision screen-
ings to Head Start programs
and public libraries across the
state. Using photo screening
technology, refraction, pupil
sizes, and corneal reflexes are
measured instantly.

pleted U.S. Coast Guard
Recruit Training Sept. 2 in
Cape May, New Jersey, with
the Echo-193 Company. He
is stationed on the Coast
Guard Cutter Mallet out of
Corpus Christi, Texas, and
plans to be an aviation sur-
vival technician.
A 2016 graduate of
Ilwaco (Washington) High
School, Corsi is the son
of Kaapi Corsi of Long
Beach, Washington, and
Scott Corsi of Ilwaco, and
grandson of Caapi Ferrand
of Long Beach.
The Astoria Rotary hon-
ored two Astoria High School
seniors, Raina Christian and
Jasyn Gohl, as Students of the
Month for October at the Oct.
11 meeting. Both students
received a Rotary Certificate
and a gift certificate from The
Rusty Cup.
Astoria Rotary will select
Students of the Month during
the school year from the junior
and senior classes at AHS and
Knappa High School. To be
selected, students must be in
good standing in school and
involved in school and commu-
nity activities.
Gohl is the son of Tal and
Kendra Gohl. He is involved in
the Key Club, National Honor
Society and varsity basketball
and baseball, and is the Astoria
School District parliamentar-
ian. He hopes to attend the Uni-
versity of Oregon or Oregon
State University to study kine-
siology and psychology.
Christian is the daughter
of Diane and David Christian.
Raina is involved in the Key
Club (vice president), Chinese
Club (founder), Art Out Loud
Club and National Honor Soci-
ety, and is chief editor of the
Astor Post.
Compassionate Companions sought
The Daily Astorian
Clatsop Care Center is
accepting applications for
Compassionate
Companion
volunteers, who befriend care
center residents in times of
need. Volunteer roles are flex-
ible and can accommodate
many schedules and interests.
Current needs for the program
include volunteers for regu-
larly scheduled supportive one-
on-one visits with residents in
emotional crisis, and volunteers
for short-term commitments to
support residents who are in
the terminal process, and their
families.
Specialized training and
ongoing support to volun-
teers will be provided. Volun-
teers will work on an on-call
basis, and may be placed
with residents living at Clat-
sop Care Center or Clatsop
Manzanita residents serve
pancakes to show thanks
Retirement Village.
Qualities that make a suc-
cessful volunteer include com-
passion, patience, good lis-
tening skills and the ability to
maintain confidentiality laws.
Attendance at training work-
shop from 8:30 a.m. to noon
