IDs: No legislation planned to change the state law
Continued from Page 1A
Congress
passed
the
Real ID Act in response to
the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It
requires higher standards of
proof of legal U.S. residency
and additional security mea-
sures that make the cards
harder to replicate.
The Oregon Legislature in
2009 banned the DMV from
spending state funds to com-
ply with the federal act, which
lawmakers saw as an unfunded
mandate. Since then, the state
has routinely and successfully
sought deadline extensions.
Lawmakers briefed on
the issue earlier this year
showed no sign of reconsid-
ering, and transportation ofi-
cials said there was no legis-
lation planned to change the
state law.
Absent a change in law or
the arrival of federal funding,
state transportation oficials
said they would continue to
seek extensions.
The Transportation Secu-
rity Administration, which
oversees airport security, said
it intends to stop accepting
non-compliant IDs on Jan.
22, 2018. States that are still
compliant — including those
whose deadlines have been
extended — face a hard dead-
line in October 2020, when
Homeland Security has said
it will require all air travelers
to carry a Real ID-compliant
license.
The federal government
this month rejected exten-
sion requests from Oklahoma,
Kentucky, Maine, Pennsylva-
nia and South Carolina. Three
others — Minnesota, Missouri
and Washington — were pre-
viously notiied that they were
not in compliance with federal
law.

Vintage Hardware co-owners Paul Tuter and Becky Johnson pose for a portrait Saturday in their newly opened location
in Astoria.
Store: First pop-up shop is collection of books
Continued from Page 1A
Just inside the front entrance,
customers are treated to a large
Union Jack covering an entire
wall, different shades of gray like
the rest of the interior. Behind the
cash register, a yellow, conical
wall painting marks the entrance
to a small alcove Johnson said
will be used for an alternating
pop-up shop carrying different
collections.
“The irst shop will be a pri-
vate collection” of books, she
said. “We have a college professor
who will come in and price them.”
Part of Vintage Hardware’s
reputation is repurposing old
building supplies into new
pieces of art. The store is divided
between departments, each illus-
trated by an artistic exhibit made
from products at the store, from a
covered seating area made from
windows and topped by lights
embedded in box springs, to a
wall hanging of chairs. Johnson
said she likes to show people what
they can create with the products
at the store.
Johnson said she and Tuter
haven’t even touched their storage
warehouse in the old location. But
the store has until the end of the
month, she said, before the sale
with Mo’s Restaurant will likely
be completed . “We’re going to
have a big inventory sale at the
end of the month,” she said.

To ind success as a bee-
keeper, keepers must be
willing to work hard and
be consistent. Above all,
though, “Beekeepers pay
attention,” Tennis said, add-
ing, “The most important
aspect of being a beekeeper
is being able to observe and
retain what you’re observ-
ing, or to analyze and under-
stand it.”
If a person does not regu-
larly interact with bees, they
likely will struggle to under-
stand the bees’ behavior,
moods and vocabulary. Bee-
keepers have to observe and
learn quickly to avoid being
stung and to keep their col-
onies healthy and thriving,
Tennis said. For instance,
bees communicate through
pheromones, and the aroma
they emanate when upset
smells like banana candy.
“You’re always going to
be learning something,” Ten-
nis said.
The work of a beekeeper
is spread throughout the
year.
In the wintertime, bees
are in a quiet state because
the weather is usually too
cold and wet for them to ly
and there is little food to for-
age. That’s when beekeepers
work on equipment, assem-
bling new parts or chang-
ing out old frames with wax
that has built up an unhealthy
amount of toxins or residue.
In March or April each
year, Tennis usually pre-
pares her honey-gathering
equipment, which includes
honey supers — smaller
boxes where bees will make
honey that get placed on top
of brood boxes and can later
be removed to retrieve the
honey — and queen exclud-
ers — a lat rack with holes
large enough to allow smaller

worker bees to enter but not
large enough for the queen
bee to get through, which
prevents her from laying in
that section.
In the spring, once Ten-
nis knows baby bees are
being laid and male bees
are around, she inspects her
hives to see if each one has
a queen and if she’s laying
well. If a hive is strong, she
then splits the colony, putting
all the frames with baby bees
in one box and the others
back into the original box.
The procedure has three ben-
eits: breaking the reproduc-
tive cycles of varroa mites
without using pesticides;
helping to build apiaries;
and controlling or preventing
swarming.
During the summer, the
bees forage and make honey.
Tennis works as a bee-wran-
gler of sorts, responding to
people’s calls for help and
catching rampaging swarms
of bees. While some are ner-
vous around swarming bees,
catching them is Tennis’
favorite task. She has found
swarms in some strange
places, including chimneys,
utility boxes, the walls of
sheds and inside a gas tank.
The next phase of bee-
keeping is harvesting honey
during the fall. Plant nectar
originally is about 80 per-
cent moisture; after the bees
process it, the moisture is
reduced to 18 percent or less,
making it a highly saturated
and hygroscopic luid. Tennis
uses a centrifuge to get the
honey from the wax combs
on her frames. Depending
on where and what plants the
nectar originated, honey can
have a variety of colors and
lavors.
Those who don’t want
to keep bees can contribute
to the health of pollinators
by taking other steps, such
as letting their lawn grow,
planting lowers that bloom
in late fall or early spring and
limiting their use of pesti-
cides and other toxic chem-
icals, Tennis said. They also
can support their community
beekeepers.
