T
he old ferry is back in town.
If all goes well, the Tourist No. 2, which
used to shuttle passengers and cars between
Astoria and Megler, Washington, will be made ship-
shape for taking people out on the Columbia River
for spectacular views of Astoria.
On a recent sunny afternoon, I found her docked
near the Columbia River Maritime Museum, and
decided to do a quick watercolor sketch.
I reached a point where the painting didn’t seem to
be going well, and set it aside to try my hand at the
huge anchor near the 17th Street Dock, then the light-
ship Columbia and U.S. Coast Guard cutter Alert.
Once home, I took out the ferry painting, and
rather than adding more color, drew in some details
with pen and ink.
It’s no great piece of art, but there’s a certain energy
I like about it.
Noel Thomas is an Astoria artist. His work can be
seen at the RiverSea Gallery.
