WORLD IN BRIEF
and loods in the heavily deforested country where many fami-
lies live in limsy houses with corrugated metal roofs.
“Some of us will die but I pray it won’t be a lot,” said Serge
Barionette in the southern town of Gressier, where a river recur-
rently bursts its banks during serious storms.
A hurricane warning was in effect for Haiti, Jamaica and
parts of Cuba. Rain was already lashing parts of Jamaica and
looding some homes, but forecasters said the southern Haitian
countryside around Jeremie and Les Cayes could see the worst
of the rains and punishing winds.

How Trump’s ‘Apprentice’ moved
from capitalism to sexism
NEW YORK — In his years as a reality TV boss on “The
Apprentice,” Donald Trump repeatedly demeaned women with
sexist language, according to show insiders who said he rated
female contestants by the size of their breasts and talked about
which ones he’d like to have sex with.
The Associated Press interviewed more than 20 people —
former crew members, editors and contestants — who described
crass behavior by Trump behind the scenes of the long-running
hit show, in which aspiring capitalists were given tasks to per-
form as they competed for jobs working for him.
The staffers and contestants agreed to recount their experi-
ences as Trump’s behavior toward women has become a core
issue in the presidential campaign. Interviewed separately, they
gave concurring accounts of inappropriate conduct on the set.
Eight former crew members recalled that he repeatedly made
lewd comments about a camerawoman he said had a nice rear,
comparing her beauty to that of his daughter, Ivanka.
During one season, Trump called for female contestants to
wear shorter dresses that also showed more cleavage, according
to contestant Gene Folkes. Several cast members said Trump
had one female contestant twirl before him so he could ogle her
igure.
In Clinton’s path to the White
House, Ohio isn’t a must-win
WASHINGTON — When Hillary Clinton arrives in Ohio
today, it will be her irst appearance in the Midwestern battle-
ground in a month.
While Clinton was away, Republican rival Donald Trump
showed strength in Ohio public opinion polls, buoyed by his
appeal with the state’s white working-class voters. In another
blow for Democrats, party groups have cut funding for their
Senate candidate, Ted Strickland, the former Ohio governor who
has struggled in a race that was once expected to be among the
most competitive in the nation.
In previous election years, any sign of shakiness in Ohio —
long a crown jewel of presidential politics — would have a cam-
paign on edge. But Democrats’ increasing reliance on minority
voters to win presidential elections has opened new avenues to
the White House for Clinton, and turned Ohio — where about
80 percent of the state’s population is white — into a less essen-
tial state.
In a memo to supporters last month, Clinton campaign man-
ager Robby Mook outlined several scenarios in which the Dem-
ocratic nominee can win the election without carrying Ohio.
“Hillary has a lot of paths,” he said conidently.
Clinton could offset a loss in Ohio with victories in either
North Carolina or Florida, states with more diverse populations.
The former secretary of state made multiple stops in both states
last month, and was back in North Carolina on Sunday.
Japanese scientist Ohsumi
wins Nobel medicine prize
STOCKHOLM — Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi was
awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in medicine today for discover-
ies related to the degrading and recycling of cellular components.
The Karolinska Institute honored Ohsumi for “brilliant exper-
iments” in the 1990s on autophagy, the machinery with which
cells recycle their content.
Disrupted autophagy has been linked to various diseases
including Parkinson’s, diabetes and cancer, the institute said.
Though the concept has been known for more than 50 years,
its “fundamental importance in physiology and medicine was
only recognized after Yoshinori Ohsumi’s paradigm-shifting
research in the 1990s,” Karolinska said in its citation.
Ohsumi was born in 1945 in Fukuoka, Japan. He is currently
a professor at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Democrat Hilary Franz, an environmental attorney, and
Republican Steve McLaughlin, a retired Navy commander, are
running next month to lead Washington’s largest ireighting
force and manage 5.6 million acres of state-owned lands.
McLaughlin, 60, who served in the Navy for 25 years, said
he supports increasing timber harvests and opening more state
lands to recreational opportunities, such as horseback riding,
hunting and off-road vehicles. The job’s primary duty is to dis-
tribute state trust money for school construction and other proj-
ects, he said.
“I believe that healthy working forests are the key to funding
our schools, and timber is the key to funding our schools,” said
McLaughlin, who is married and lives in Seabeck. “We’re har-
vesting way below what we can be without damaging anything.
I want to see those harvest levels increase because it increases
revenues, it creates jobs, it reduces ire hazards and it improves
water quality.”
Franz, 46, who is executive director of the statewide advo-
cacy group Futurewise, said timber harvests are part of the solu-
tion. But she also believes the department should look at other
ways to maximize revenue from state lands, such as leasing it for
wind or solar power or other economic development.
“I believe that we have a responsibility to fund our schools.
I believe public lands are critical to making sure that happens,”
said Franz, who is married and lives in Seattle. “I’m committed
to making sure that we are leveraging our public lands in a way
that provides a stronger funding source for our schools and that
diversiies our funding source.”
Powerful Hurricane Matthew a
threat to Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Vulnerable Haiti braced for
lash loods and violent winds from the extremely dangerous
Hurricane Matthew as the powerful storm kept on a path early
today aiming at the hemisphere’s poorest country.
The eye of the approaching Category 4 hurricane, with max-
imum sustained winds of 130 mph early today, was expected
to pass to the east of Jamaica and then cross over or be very
close to the southwestern tip of Haiti late today or early Tuesday,
the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. It was pre-
dicted to hit the lightly populated eastern tip of Cuba on Tues-
day afternoon.
Forecasters said as much as 40 inches of rain could fall on
some isolated areas of Haiti, raising fears of deadly mudslides
PARIS — Kim Kardashian West was unharmed after being
robbed at gunpoint of more than $10 million worth of jewelry
inside a private Paris residence Sunday night, police oficials
said.
A spokeswoman for Kardashian West said the reality TV star,
who was in Paris attending fashion week shows, was “badly
shaken but physically unharmed” after masked men dressed as
police oficers also tied her up in the lat’s bathroom before lee-
ing the scene.
A Paris police oficial said ive assailants, who were still at
large, stole a jewelry box containing valuables worth $6.7 mil-
lion as well as a ring worth 4 million euros.
In a message to The Associated Press, the Paris prosecutors’
ofice said that only two of the ive suspects forced their way into
the apartment, located in the chic eighth district of the French
capital.
With France under a state of emergency following terror
attacks that left more than 200 people dead in the last 20 months,
news of the robbery immediately sparked criticism from politi-
cal opponents to the Socialist government.
