Clinton back on campaign trail
after releasing health info
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Hillary Clinton returns to the cam-
paign trail Thursday following a bout of pneumonia that side-
lined her for three days and revived questions about both the
Democratic nominee and Republican Donald Trump’s transpar-
ency regarding their health.
Clinton’s campaign responded with a new letter from her
doctor Wednesday declaring her “it to serve” as president and
recovering well from her recent illness. The letter — the irst sub-
stantial update on her health in more than a year — details the
medications she is taking, her cholesterol levels and other results
from a physical exam.
Trump says he, too, plans to release details from a recent
physical, though it’s unclear when that will happen and how
much information he will provide. So far, the businessman has
only released a widely mocked letter from his longtime physician
declaring he would be the healthiest president in history.
In keeping with Trump’s unusual approach to transparency,
the Republican handed over a one-page summary of his recent
exam to Dr. Mehmet Oz while taping an episode of Oz’s show. A
release from the show said “Dr. Oz took Mr. Trump though a full
review of his systems,” including his nervous system, cardiovas-
cular health, prostate health and family medical history.
The show is due to air Thursday. Trump’s campaign has not
made a copy of the summary public ahead of the airing, nor is it
certain he will do so after.
Witness says Philippine
president ordered killings
MANILA, Philippines — A former Filipino militiaman tes-
tiied before the country’s Senate on Thursday that President
Rodrigo Duterte, when he was still a city mayor, ordered him and
other members of a liquidation squad to kill criminals and oppo-
nents in gangland-style assaults that left about 1,000 dead.
Edgar Matobato, 57, told the nationally televised Senate com-
mittee hearing that he heard Duterte order some of the killings and
acknowledged he himself carried out about 50 of the abductions
and deadly assaults, including a suspected kidnapper who they
fed to a crocodile in 2007 in southern Davao del Sur province.
The Senate committee inquiry was being led by Sen. Leila de
Lima, a staunch critic of Duterte’s anti-drug campaign that has
left more than 3,000 suspected drug users and dealers dead since
he assumed the presidency in June. Duterte has accused de Lima
of involvement in illegal drugs, alleging that she used to have a
driver who took money from detained drug lords. She has denied
the allegations.
The killings of the suspected drug dealers have sparked con-
cerns in the Philippines and among U.N. and U.S. oficials,
including President Barack Obama, who have urged Duterte’s
government to stop the killings and ensure his anti-drug war
complies with human rights laws and the rule of law.
Duterte has rejected the criticisms, questioning the right of
the U.N., the U.S. and Obama to raise human rights issues, when
U.S. forces, for example, had massacred Muslims in the coun-
try’s south in the early 1900s as part of a paciication campaign.
Safety recommendations
unfulilled 7 years after Flight 1549
WASHINGTON — More than seven years after an airline
captain saved 155 lives by ditching his crippled airliner in the
Hudson River, now the basis of a new movie, most of the safety
recommendations stemming from the accident haven’t been car-
ried out.
Of the 35 recommendations made by the National Transpor-
tation Safety Board in response to the incident involving US Air-
ways Flight 1549, only six have been successfully completed,
according to an Associated Press review of board records. Four-
teen of the recommendations issued to the Federal Aviation
Administration and its European counterpart, EASA, are marked

and the rest remain unresolved.
The movie “Sully,” which opened in theaters last week, cel-
ebrates how veteran pilot Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, played
by Tom Hanks, along with his co-pilot, light attendants, air traf-
ic controllers, ferry boat operators and irst responders did their
jobs with professionalism and competence, averting a potential
tragedy. The plane lost thrust in both engines after colliding with
a lock of Canada geese shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Air-
port in New York. No one died, and only ive people were seri-
ously injured.
“The FAA was very upset back then that we made any recom-
mendations at all,” recalled Tom Haueter, who was the NTSB’s
head of major accident investigations at the time. “They thought
this was a success story.”
But to investigators, the event turned up problems. “This
could happen again and we want to make sure that if it does, there
are some better safety measures in place,” Haueter said.
YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar economists and busi-
nessmen on Thursday welcomed President Barack Obama’s
announcement that the U.S. will lift economic sanctions and
restore long-lost trade beneits to the Southeast Asian country as
it emerges from half a century of oppressive military rule.
The nation of more than 50 million is rich in natural resources,
and before a military coup in the early 1960s it was among the
region’s stronger economies. Today it’s among Asia’s least devel-
oped and poorest countries, with more than a quarter of the pop-
ulation living in poverty. Experts hope the lifting of sanctions
helps change that by making it easier for U.S. companies to
invest and do business here.
“There will be more trading and investment as the result
of lifting sanctions on our country. It will really beneit the
citizens of this country and be a great hope for Myanmar’s
economic development,” said Khin Maung Nyo, a Myanmar
economist.
The United States irst imposed sanctions on Myanmar in
1997, when the military junta ruled. In 2011, the junta gave way
to a quasi-civilian government that was dominated by former
military oficials but still ushered in some democratic reforms,
leading the U.S. to restore full diplomatic relations and ease
sanctions.
Myanmar’s new government took power in April after the
party led by pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi won a
landslide election victory late last year. The military still retains
power in the government, in part through a constitution that
effectively bars Suu Kyi from the presidency. She is formally
state counselor and foreign minister but is universally viewed as
the country’s leader.
Suspect in mosque ire had made
anti-Islamic Facebook posts
FORT PIERCE, Fla. — About two months before Joseph
Michael Schreiber allegedly tried to burn down a mosque some-
times attended by Orlando nightclub shooter Omar Mateen, he
posted on Facebook that “All Islam is radical” and that all Mus-
lims should be treated as terrorists and criminals.
Schreiber, 32, was arrested without incident Wednesday
afternoon and was being interrogated by investigators looking
into the ire set late Sunday at the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce,
said Maj. David Thompson of the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s
Ofice.
A July post placed on Facebook by Schreiber, who is Jew-
ish, stated that, “IF AMERICA truly wants peace and safety and
pursuit of happiness they should consider all forms of ISLAM
as radical. … ALL ISLAM IS RADICAL, and should be con-
sidered TERRORIST AND CRIMANALS (sic) and all hoo
(sic) participate in such activity should be found guilty of WAR
CRIM (sic) until law and order is restored in this beautiful free
country.”
Thompson told a news conference that Schreiber, who has a
criminal record, was taken into custody on a street in Fort Pierce
by authorities acting on tips from members of the community
and aided by surveillance video taken from the mosque and
elsewhere. He said the arson charge, coupled with a hate crime
enhancement under Florida law, carries a sentence of up to 30
years in prison. Thompson said detectives were still questioning
Schreiber on Wednesday evening, and he didn’t say if Schreiber
had a lawyer.
The ire was set late Sunday on the 15th anniversary of the
Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The blaze also coincided with the
