WORLD IN BRIEF
in disaster response plans on local, state and fed-
eral levels. More than 1,500 people were killed in
Louisiana alone. After the levees failed and inun-
dated New Orleans and surrounding communi-
ties, thousands were plucked from rooftops and
attics. Response was a ly-by-the-seat-of-your
pants effort, with no coordinated strategy for res-
cues — or what to do with the people saved. First
responders were overwhelmed, and many were
left to fend for themselves.

Clinton and Trump
confront weaknesses
in security forum
NEW YORK — Donald Trump and Hil-
lary Clinton confronted their key weaknesses
in a televised national security forum, with the
Republican defending his preparedness to be
commander in chief despite vague plans for
tackling global challenges and the Democrat
arguing that her controversial email practices
did not expose questionable judgment.
Trump also renewed his praise of Russian
President Vladimir Putin and his disdain for
President Barack Obama, saying that the Rus-
sian enjoyed an 82 percent approval rating.
“The man has very strong control over a coun-
try,” Trump said. “It’s a very different system
and I don’t happen to like the system, but cer-
tainly, in that system, he’s been a leader, far
more than our president has been a leader.”
The candidates spoke back-to-back Wednes-
day night, each ielding 30 minutes of questions.
While the candidates never appeared on stage
together, the session served as a preview of sorts
for their highly-anticipated presidential debates.
By virtue of a coin lip, Clinton took the
stage irst and quickly found herself responding
at length to questions about her years in govern-
ment. She reiterated that she had made mistakes
in relying on a personal email account and pri-
vate server as secretary of state and in voting for
the 2003 invasion of Iraq as a senator. But she
defended her support for U.S. military interven-
tion to help oust a dictator in Libya, despite the
chaotic aftermath.
“I’m asking to be judged on the totality of my
record,” said Clinton, who grew visibly irritated at
times with the repeated focus on her past actions.
Obama: Americans
will reject Trump’s
‘whacky’ ideas
VIENTIANE, Laos — President Barack
Obama said Thursday that Republican Donald
Trump conirms his belief that Trump isn’t quali-
ied to be president “every time he speaks,” adding
that he was conident Americans would ultimately
reject the brash billionaire on Election Day.
Obama, closing out his inal presidential trip
to Asia, said his meetings with foreign leaders
during the trip had illustrated that governing is
“serious business” requiring knowledge, prepa-
ration and thought-out policies that can actu-
ally be implemented. He urged Americans not
to allow the “outrageous behavior” seen amid
the campaign-season din to become the new
normal.
“The most important thing for the public and
the press is to just listen to what he says and fol-
low up and ask questions to what appear to be
either contradictory or uninformed or outright
whacky ideas,” Obama said.
Throughout the campaign, Obama has
repeatedly denounced Trump and deemed him
“unit” to serve as commander in chief, while
arguing that his controversial positions and
comments are a step beyond what Republican
nominees have embraced in the past. Obama
has endorsed Hillary Clinton and has said he
plans to campaign full-force for the Democrat
ahead of the November election.
Obama’s remarks came at the end of a gruel-

ing nine-day trip that took the him to Laos and
China following U.S. stops in Nevada, Hawaii
and Midway Atoll in the Paciic Ocean. Obama
said that the United States and Southeast Asian
nations gathered in Laos have advanced a vision
of an open, dynamic and competitive economic
system in which all nations play by the same
rules.
“I don’t want to dress in tactical gear and
camo all the time. I love tactical clothing for the
range. It’s comfortable. I don’t want to ruin my
everyday clothing,” said Marilyn Smolenski,
who in 2012 created Nickel and Lace, a com-
pany that caters to women who want to carry
a irearm concealed but don’t want to trade in
their femininity. “But I don’t want to wear it to
the grocery store.”
Smolenski started her company right around
the time when Chicago city laws changed and
she could again legally carry a irearm. When
that happened, she struggled to ind something
that didn’t make her look frumpy and didn’t
broadcast that she was packing heat. Most of the
clothing was geared to men — coats with hid-
den pockets, or holsters that tuck neatly inside
a waistband. But until the last few years, those
weren’t always great options for women who
don’t wear belts as frequently and are more
likely than men to wear form-itting clothing,
making it dificult to hide the fact they’re car-
rying a irearm.
Bruce Springsteen
again breaks record
for longest US show
PHILADELPHIA — Bruce Springsteen
and the E Street Band just don’t want to leave
the stage.
Wednesday night’s concert at Citizens Bank
Park in Philadelphia lasted nearly four hours,
four minutes, breaking the previous record for
the group’s longest U.S. show set last week.
Philadelphia Daily News sports statistician
and Springsteen fan Bob Vetrone Jr. clocked
the show at 4 hours, 3 minutes, 46 seconds.
The band played four hours Aug. 30 at
MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The Boss’ longest show in the world was 4
hours, 6 minutes in Helsinki, Finland, in 2012.

Women buying irearms
creates concealed-carry
fashion market
ATLANTA — Does this gun make me look
fat?
For decades, women have had few choices
when it comes to the clothing they can wear to
hide that they’re carrying a irearm. They could
wear baggy T-shirts or coats, or put it in a purse
and hope it didn’t get swiped or that they didn’t
have trouble getting it out in an emergency.
Enter holsters, corsets, camisoles and other
clothing designed to be lattering, feminine —
and functional — for the pistol-packin’ mama
crowd.

BATON ROUGE, La. — Eleven years ago,
Sam Barbera hooked up his boat and headed
to New Orleans to ferry people from Hurri-
cane Katrina’s loodwaters. Four weeks ago, he
found himself in another boat for rescues — this
time at home in Baton Rouge, when a massive
rainstorm ravaged the area.
It was “night and day,” he said. “Katrina was
kind of baptism by ire. It was just people show-
ing up, everybody doing their own thing.”
But during the catastrophic looding in
mid-August, police directed volunteer boats and
their owners — nicknamed the “Cajun Navy”
— to neighborhoods where water was rising,
and social media postings offered guidance on
where victims needed help.
“You didn’t have that in Katrina. Katrina was
kind of like you just put your boat in. Katrina
was mayhem,” Barbera said.

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple wants to push
consumers further into a wireless world. Its tac-
tics: Eliminate the standard headphone jack in
its newest iPhones and market new “AirPods”
— tiny wireless earbuds that the company
claims greatly improve on standard Bluetooth
technology.
But that strategy has some risks.
Start with the AirPods themselves. These are
a pair of earbuds, each with an inch or so of pro-
truding plastic, and nothing else — no wires to
hold them together, no dangling cords. If they
live up to Apple’s claims, they’re a technolog-
ical marvel, tiny and expensive. And, perhaps,
also easily dislodged or misplaced.
Analysts at IHS Technology say that Apple
used a smooth-surfaced design that doesn’t con-
form to the shape of the ear, and note that hav-
ing AirPods fall out while running or biking “is
less forgivable at the $159 cost level.” Or as
Bob O’Donnell, a veteran consumer tech ana-
lyst at Technalysis Research, puts it: “You start
losing those things at $160 a pair, you’re going
to go crazy.”
Real-life accident
investigators object
to portrayal in ‘Sully’
WASHINGTON — Losing thrust in both
engines but still managing to land an airliner full
of people in the Hudson River without the loss
of a single life is plenty dramatic. But the drama
in ‘Sully,’ the movie about the “Miracle on the
Hudson” ditching of U.S. Airways Flight 1549,
doesn’t stop there.
And that’s a problem, say the former govern-
ment accident investigators involved in the real-
life investigation into the 2009 accident. The
public, as well as pilots and others in the avi-
ation industry, who see the movie may get the
wrong impression that investigators were try-
ing to smear the pilot, Chesley “Sully” Sullen-
berger, they said.
“We’re not the KGB. We’re not the
Gestapo,” said Robert Benzon, who led the
National Transportation Safety Board’s investi-
gation. “We’re the guys with the white hats on.”
The ilm, scheduled for release in theaters on
Friday, portrays investigators as more like pros-
ecutors looking for any excuse to blame Sullen-
berger for the mishap.
Could the plane have made it back to
LaGuardia Airport if Sullenberger, portrayed by
actor Tom Hanks, had turned it around? Did the
thrust in both engines quit after the plane struck
a lock of geese or was there still some power
in one? Was the US Airways captain’s perfor-
mance affected by other factors? When was his
last alcoholic drink? Was he having problems at
home?
