SEASIDE — The Seaside
boys soccer team got a irst-
hand look at last year’s state
runner-up at the 4A level, as
the Gulls hosted the Stayton
Eagles for a nonleague con-
test Tuesday night at Broad-
way Field.
Stayton — which lost last
year’s state title game to Sis-
ters, 2-1 — took advantage of
a few defensive mistakes by
the Gulls to post a 4-1 win over
Seaside, handing the Gulls
their irst loss of the season.
The Eagles found the back
of the net on their very irst
scoring chance, in the 12th
minute of the irst half.
A back-pass by the Gulls to
keeper Jesus Perez ended up
getting past Perez for a corner
kick for the Eagles.
And on the well-executed
corner, Alex Cramer delivered
a short pass to David Ramirez,
who crossed to Levi Summers,
and Summers sent a header
past Seaside keeper Jesus
Perez for a 1-0 lead.
Stayton picked up a crucial
second goal late in the irst half
for a 2-nil advantage.
On a free kick from Jose
Gomez near the Gulls’ bench,
Ramirez gathered in a short
pass and boomed the ball into
the net from 15 yards out, with
just 48 seconds left in the half.
Seaside’s irst shot on goal
came in the closing seconds
of the half, a long attempt by
Jackson Januik.
The Gulls’ irst shot of the
second half, however, came
just four minutes, 50 seconds
after the kickoff. Colton Car-
ter gathered in a delection and
scored on a left-footer from
almost 30 yards away, past a
diving Jose Manuel Navarro,
Stayton’s sophomore keeper.
But whatever momentum
the Gulls may have gained,
they quickly lost.
Just 53 seconds later, a mis-
played ball on Seaside’s defen-
sive end resulted in a third goal
for the Eagles, as Cramer drib-
bled the ball past Perez and

KNAPPA — Northwest
League volleyball is oficially
open for business, with four
matches around the region
tipping off the league season
Tuesday night.
At Knappa, the Lady
Loggers opened league play
against Neah-Kah-Nie — a
team the Loggers were facing
for the third time this season.
After sweeping the Pirates
in a pair of nonleague tour-
naments at Warrenton and
Neah-Kah-Nie over the last
two weeks, Knappa still has
the upper hand on the Pirates,
defeating the visitors in four
games Tuesday, 25-15, 22-25,
25-11, 25-13.
“The Lady Loggers were
hyped up and ready for this
match, and came out strong in
the irst game,” said Knappa
coach Jeff Kaul. “In the second
game we got a little disjointed
at times and the Pirates took
advantage of it, and got the lead
early and held on until the end.”
The third and fourth games
were “deinitely the Loggers’
games,” he said. “Our serv-
ing was much better tonight
than what we have been expe-
riencing lately, with only six
missed serves total and 18
aces combined for the team.
But the real gain tonight was
our conidence in our hitting
both at the net and in the back
court.”
Paris Vanderburg was
16-for-16 from the service
line, with four aces to go with
eight assists and ive kills.
Kaitlyn Truax was 17-of-
18 serving, with ive aces and
six kills, and Kaitlyn Landwehr
served up four aces, with 13
digs, six assists and ive kills.
Jaden Miethe and Alisha
Murphy combined for 17 digs,
and Kourtney Tischer added
ive service aces.
Knappa improves to 5-2
overall, while the Pirates drop
to 0-5. The Loggers take to the
road for matches at Columbia
Christian and City Christian
next week.

STAYTON — On
their second trip the
Willamette Valley in six
days, the Seaside girls
soccer team fell short at
Stayton Tuesday night,
in a nonleague game.
Stayton posted a
4-1 win over the Lady
Gulls, who opened the
season last week with a
2-2 tie at North Marion.
Seaside plays its home
opener at 7 p.m. Thurs-
day against Corbett.

GLADSTONE — The
Seaside volleyball team
improved to 3-1 overall, fol-
lowing a three-game sweep
Tuesday at Gladstone, 25-8,
25-13, 25-17.
“We came out strong
and ready to play tonight,”
said Seaside coach Angie
Huntsman. “We passed well,
served tough and had very
few unforced errors.
“Maddi Utti, Tori Tom-
lin and Alyssia Gonzales all
made strong contributions
offensively,” she said. “We’re
excited to have the next three
days to practice this week and
then we’re at Cascade for a
tournament Saturday.”
SCOREBOARD
scored into an open net.
Stayton tacked on a fourth
goal in the 53rd minute, on
another well-executed corner
from Cramer, who centered a
ball perfectly to David Gomez,
who scored in a crowd on a
header.
The Gulls will try to bounce
back in a nonleague game
