Paddlers: Lewis and Clark expedition
spent a majority of their travel on water

SALEM — Oregon and
Washington state oficials
are investigating whether
personal information was
compromised during a
breach of an online system
used to process hunting and

Jill Harding, visitor ser-
vices chief at the park, said
paddling for the centennial
ties in nicely with the history
of the Lewis and Clark and
the local Chinook and Clat-
sop tribes.

At Otter Point, everyone
sang “Happy Birthday” to the
National Park Service. Rang-
ers on land ired black pow-
der guns in celebration, as pad-
dlers yelled, “hip hip huzzah!”
The leet of paddlers —
which one ranger jokingly called
an armada — returned to Netul
Landing for birthday cake.
The paddlers included
locals who brought their own
watercrafts, a dozen deaf or
hard-of-hearing students from
the Northwest Youth Corps
American Sign Language
crew, and popular paddler
“Willow Bill” Goulardt, of
Wheeler, who rides in his dug-
out canoe, the Flying Eagle.
Clatterbuck said it was a rare
opportunity to have the Ameri-
can Sign Language crew at the
park this summer. The youth
worked for two weeks, mostly
at the park’s Yeon Property.
After inishing their cap-
stone project at the Yeon Prop-
erty, Clatterbuck said, the crew
was invited to join in the cen-
tennial celebration.
Northwest Youth Corps
provides youth with opportu-
nities to work in the outdoors
and learn about environmental
stewardship. The crew spent
the summer working around
the Northwest, including on
trails in Whidbey Island in
Washington state.
For “Willow Bill,” he has
attended a few previous festiv-
ities at the park, including the
Fort Clatsop’s bicentennial.
“It’s an honor to be com-
ing in and being a part of their
100th birthday,” he said.

down until further notice.
The closure applies only
to online sales, which com-
prise less than 20 percent
of all hunting and ishing
license sales.
Licenses may still be pur-
chased at Oregon Fish and
Wildlife Department ofices
and at various retail outlets
throughout the state.
Idaho has also reported
similar breaches.

The Lewis and Clark expe-
dition spent a majority of their
travel on the water. When they
established Fort Clatsop, they
regularly traversed the nearby
waterways.
Many park visitors ask
Harding why Fort Clatsop

was built so far away from
the water. When you look at
the campsite from the Lewis
and Clark River, she said, the
campsite is actually not that
far. It sits on a knoll, just 30
feet above high tide.
While each national park

honored the 100th anniversary in
a different way, Harding said, it
was itting for Lewis and Clark
National Historical Park to spend
the centennial on the water.
“It’s a nod to the water and
water as transportation,” Hard-
ing said.

WARRENTON — The
Seaside volleyball team
overcame a hot night in
the Warrenton gymnasium
Thursday, in a season-open-
ing nonleague match.
The Gulls outlasted the
Warriors in four games,
25-19, 21-25, 25-7, 25-10 to
open the 2016 season.
Warrenton won Game 2,
but also lost outside hitter
Landree Miethe to an ankle
sprain during the game, and
the senior did not return.
Seaside was able to inish
off the Warriors in Games 3
and 4.
Miethe was 8-for-10
hitting before she left the
match, while teammate
Katelynn Blodgett was
6-for-9.
Meanwhile, “We did
some things well, and there
are some things we need
to improve,” said Sea-
side coach Angie Hunts-
man. “We’ll get a look at the
league (today) at the jambo-
ree at Valley Catholic, and
then we’ll get back into the
gym and get to work.”
After the Valley Catholic
jamboree, the Gulls return to
action Tuesday with a non-
league match at North Mar-
ion, while Warrenton hosts a
tournament Saturday, with
the action beginning at 9
a.m.
Astoria matches
canceled
The Astoria volleyball
team was scheduled to open
the Jessie Todd era Thurs-
day, with a pair of matches at
Santiam Christian, vs. San-
tiam Christian and Sisters.
An accident on Highway
26 prevented the Lady Fish-
ermen from completing the
trip.
After taking part in a
jamboree Friday at Valley
Catholic, Astoria returns to
action Tuesday for a non-
league match at Catlin
Gabel.
