8A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 2016 WORLD BRIEFLY safe houses as a stream of Islamic State imams came in to indoctrinate them, according to court testimony and interviews by The Associated Press. “I realized that I was in the wrong place when they began to ask me questions on these forms like ‘when you die, who should we call?’” said the 32-year-old European recruit, speaking to the AP on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals. He said he thought he was joining a group to ight President Bashar Assad and help Syrians, not the Islamic State. The European, whose boyish demeanor makes him appear far younger than his age, went to Syria in 2014. He said new recruits were shown IS propaganda videos on Islam, and the visiting imams repeatedly praised martyrdom. Far from home, unschooled in religion, having severed family ties and turned over electronic devices, most were in little position to judge. Associated Press Northern Calif. wildire forces 4,000 to evacuate LOWER LAKE, Calif. — A wildire destroyed at least 10 homes and forced some 4,000 of people to lee their homes as lames jumped a road and moved into a Northern Cali- fornia town located miles away from a devastat- ing wildire nearly a year ago. The ire reached Main Street in Lower Lake, a town of about 1,200 about 90 miles north of San Francisco, on Sunday and burned the post ofice, a winery, a Habitat for Humanity ofice and sev- eral businesses as thick, black smoke loomed over the small downtown strip. Staff at a hos- pital in Clearlake, a neighboring town of about 15,000, rushed to transfer 16 patients to another hospital while ireighters carried goats and other animals to safety as homes burned around them. The blaze was one of 11 large wildires burn- ing in California, where high temperatures com- bined with parched conditions brought on by a ive-year drought raised the ire danger. In cen- tral California, a day-old wildire burned 20 structures and threatened 150 homes. Oficials conirmed 10 homes around Lower Lake were burned, although witnesses said they could see more. Tragically, the Habitat for Humanity ofice was working to raise money to help rebuild homes destroyed by a devastating wildire that killed four people and destroyed more than 1,300 homes nearly a year ago. “Emotions are still incredibly raw from the Valley Fire,” said state Sen. Mike McGuire about last year’s wildire. Inside an Olympian’s testosterone ordeal RIO DE JANEIRO — The young athlete, now competing at the Rio Games, always con- sidered herself to be a girl just like the others, a girl who loved to run. Then the governing body of track and ield told her she was different, so different that her track career could be over. Marked “conidential” and signed “best sporting regards,” the letter outlined a choice for the athlete: Open herself up to a panel of med- AP Photo/Josh Edelson A truck burns in the town of Lower Lake, Calif., on Sunday. She had fallen foul of the International Asso- ciation of Athletics Federations’ rules aimed at providing a fair playing ield for women by keeping out athletes with high testosterone, a naturally occurring strength-building hormone. The IAAF’s medical director at the time told track authorities in the athlete’s country that blood and urine tests detected testosterone lev- els that were “abnormally high.” The suspected cause, wrote Dr. Gabriel Dolle, wasn’t doping but another hot-button issue likely to lare in the Rio Olympics’ inal week: hyperandrogenism. Had the athlete not been a runner, she might never have known of her condition. It was lagged up by IAAF tests that look for banned drugs. The athlete was stunned when told that her testosterone pointed to hyperandrogenism, her then-coach told The Associated Press. Islamic State gets know-nothing recruits and rejoices PARIS — The jihadi employment form asked the recruits, on a scale of 1 to 3, to rate their knowl- edge of Islam. And the Islamic State applicants, herded into a hangar somewhere at the Syria-Turkey border, turned out to be overwhelmingly ignorant. The extremist group could hardly have hoped for better. At the height of Islamic State’s drive for foot soldiers in 2013 and 2014, typical recruits included the group of Frenchmen who went bar-hopping with their recruiter back home, the recent Euro- pean convert who now hesitantly describes him- self as gay, and two Britons who ordered “The Koran for Dummies” and “Islam for Dummies” from Amazon to prepare for jihad abroad. Their intake process complete, they were grouped in Trump looking to institute political tests for immigrants JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Donald Trump will declare an end to nation building if elected president, replacing it with what aides described as “foreign policy realism” focused on destroying the Islamic State group and other extremist organizations. In a speech the Republican presidential nominee will deliver on Monday in Ohio, Trump will argue that the country needs to work with anyone that shares that mission, regardless of other ideological and strategic disagreements. Any country that wants to work with the U.S. to defeat “radical Islamic ter- rorism” will be a U.S. ally, he is expected to say. “Mr. Trump’s speech will explain that while we can’t choose our friends, we must always recognize our enemies,” Trump senior policy adviser Stephen Miller said Sunday. On the eve of the speech, the Clinton cam- paign slammed Trump’s campaign manager for ties to Russia and pro-Kremlin interests, an apparent reference to a New York Times story published Sunday night. The story alleges Paul Manafort received $12.7 million from Ukraine’s former pro-Russia president and his political party for consultant work over a ive- year period.
