Q&A
with
Joanie Chapel
Q: What are you doing in your garden now?
A: This month I am trying to stay ahead of the weeds
that overtake my garden. I have 6 acres and about 2 acres
is landscaped and needs daily work. We own an RV park
11 miles from Astoria and I want it to look good for the
tenants and tourists. We are very busy during the summer.

Q: What’s your biggest challenge?
A: My biggest challenge is keeping the deer from eat-
ing everything I plant. We have tried motion lights, spray-
ing, etc. Nothing works for long. The deer have NEVER
eaten my hostas. I had a 40-plant hosta garden. The deer
destroyed it in one night two weeks ago. We can’t fence
much other than the garden because the tenants come
and go.
The deer love lilies and gladiolas too. We also
have three herds of elk on Highway 202 that show up
occasionally.
I discovered 11 years ago deer do not eat dahlias.
They bloom beautifully for months. I have 189 in full
bloom.
Q: What is your favorite plant?
A: Naturally, dahlias are my favorite lower. I sell the

tubers at the “Spring into Gardening” program the Master
Gardeners have every spring at the fairgrounds.
Q: What is the most recent gardening book you
have read?
A: “Right Plant, Right Place” by Nicola Ferguson.
Q: What part of your personality is relected in your
garden?
A: The part of my personality relected in my garden is
color! The brighter the better. I have made over 100 quilts
and most are made with bright colorful batiks.

People v. cars
lright, we get that the trafic is bad during the summer. But use some
common sense:
• Man screaming and yelling bizarre things in a parking lot. #Astoria
• Woman jumping out in front of vehicles. #Astoria
